WordPress User Meetup

Themes, themes, themes!

Now that we have been through all of the essential setup and content topics, it is time to turn our attention to themes.

With WordPress, themes are responsible for the layout and styling of your site. So this is where you really get to put your personal stamp on your site - you can make it look as different as you want, or you can choose to just install your chosen theme and leave it at that.

But how do you know what theme to choose? After all, there are almost 3,000 themes in the WordPress repository, over 4,600 WordPress themes on ThemeForest, and numerous other premium theme vendors to choose from.

Come along this month and we will make things a bit clearer for you.

Good question John! I also would like to know how I can set up a full width slider. I have sliders on my main webpage, but don't know how to enlarge the image so that it fits the whole full page from one side of the screen to the other.

    Could someone advise? Thanks!

    Ok here's 2 questions that are causing me to lose sleep. 1. How do you set up a full width slider (i.e. from one side of the screen to the other);
    2. How do make a menu stick to the the top while the rest of the page scrolls.

    An example is at www.sophos.com

Moral: A little knowledge is not only dangerous, it fills you with a false sense of css.

    Cheers,
    John

I have a prior commitment so can't get there tonight, sadly. Themes - sounds like a good topic. I'm looking forward to seeing the recording. :-) Cheers, John. P.S Is there a developers meeting next week?

Hi John, the other organisers were tied up tonight so there wasn't anyone to film - but I'll be uploading the slides shortly and it's a topic I'm sure we cover again at future sessions :)

  • Nat

hi are we supposed to bring a laptop along? I have an Apple Mac and downloaded wordpress? haven't been to one of these before.

    November 12

    • Chris La N.

No Nat you don't need to bring anything unless you want to take notes. Presentations are done in a relaxed atmosphere, and generally the presenter shares a link to slides, and If Anthony is back in Australia, he sometimes records a video of the speaker from the meetup, to find some of the past presentations, look here http://www.meetup.com.... I personally take notes in my phone, but it depends on your preference.
