WordPress Melbourne March 2013 Developers (Advanced/Tech) Meetup

This month's meetup is targeted at WordPress developers and advanced users.

Beginners are encouraged to attend a Beginners meetup event (April) instead.

6.30pm - 7pm - Free Pizza (thanks to envato) & Socialising

7 - 7.10pm - Housekeeping, Agenda & WordPress News

7.10pm - 7.30: WordPress for Applications - Mateusz Michalik.
An intro on how to use WordPress for broader applications (other than blogs).

Mat will cover the basic concepts behind setting up things like competition entry mechanisms, using 'posts' for objects (such as locations on a map), drawing on projects he's built and focusing on WordPress applications that involve user interaction.

7:30 - 8pm:  WordPress Theme Submissions - Anthony Hortin
Anthony will cover the steps involved in getting a WordPress theme ready for submission to the WordPress theme Directory. He will also cover developer requirements and testing procedures to make sure your submission goes as smooth as possible.

8pm - Wrap up

We'll then head to the nearby Post Office Hotel for drinks.

Also - just a reminder that WordCamp Melbourne is scheduled for April 27th & 28th. Grab your ticket here http://2013.melbourne.wordcamp.org/

I have done wordpress development on my locat and then ported it over to the online webserver. But whenever I do this it is time consuming. I'd like to understand how to do this efficiently

With shared hosting you wouldn't be able to run bamboo but you could still publish to shared hosting over ftp from it without any hassles. It is overkill for the majority of people though. You could also setup git directly on the box with a watcher to grab changes whenever a commit is made but that won't take care of your database, there is also free services such as deployhq that will do that for you without you needing to set much up

I use an xampp and svn combo. But bamboo sounds interesting.

Just wanted to say thanks again for listening to all those that attended. We had fun and it was nice to have the opportunity to share some of our work and experiences with using WordPress (which will hopefully be beneficial to someone else out there!)

Hi guys, just wondering... if i'm relatively new to wordpress (i've made 1 site so far and it took me f-o-r-e-v-e-r), is it worth me checking out this one even though i'm not an advanced user? I went to the beginner meetup, and I'm super keen to hear more...

    February 25

    • Paul

Information is power! Definitely worth it, if nothing else it will let you hear more about WP and grow your network of people who may know more. Might provide you with tips on fast tracking FOREVER too!

    • Jack Barker

I agree with Paul. If you've got one site finished, you're heaps ahead. The advanced session isn't meant to be scary :)

I have hacked / developed 1 word press plugin. When you are developing wordpress plugins what is the best practice method for architecting them.

When would you decide to split a plugin into more than one script? What are good practice in terms of layout and structure? When it is best to code in a plugin or change the theme? What is the best way of getting your head around all the word press libraries so you limit the amount of unnecessary php coding that you complete?

  • Cullen Prosper

Hope we can touch on some designing for conversion ideas if theres time, looking forward to it.

    February 22

    • Paul

What do you mean? Are you talking about conversion theory and page layout design and action button design

      February 23

  • Bob Tyler

Interested in how to add interface to dashboard for a theme as a future topic.

    February 11

  • Mandeep 'Manny'

    Looking forward

I'd like to start initial discussions with someone about someone possibly creating a new theme for my site, would this be a good meeting for me to come to?

May be an advanced topic; but has anyone got any experience writing unit tests for their wp plugins/themes? I'd like to stop accidentally breaking things!

Might be a good topic for someone to talk on (hint hint).

This looks good. Can you provide some details on what will be focused on? Thanks in advance.
