WordPress for Non-Profits

Our WordPress for Non-Profits meetup will include a quick review of solutions for non-profits to best take advantage of WordPress. Some of the subjects covered include:

  • Why you should use WordPress in the first place
  • Using WP to build a landing page (using QuickLaunch.me theme)
  • Membership and e-commerce plugins to collect donations
  • Optimization tips for current Wordpress site (through a group critique)

The format will include a round-table discussion of all participants for non-profits to maximize their publicity/marketing  and fund-raising opportunities using the WordPress platform.

I was impressed with the level of the information that helps to launch or improve a site.

Well thought out, simple and clear. Some great tools were presented; I'd have liked to talk more about good nonprofit sites that were built using WP. We tend to learn by example. Noel and Natalie are always friendly and helpful, which is nice for those of us who are relative newbies.

I cannot hear the sound - it is garbled, maybe some feedback interference

I'm looking at a black screen & no sound-- except the"socal_WP on USTREAM" in the upper lefthand corner.

Hi Deena - this is our first time trying to stream a meetup and uStream seems a bit stuttery. Try refreshing and hopefully the stream will improve.

Hi Jan - We've tested on our side, and we can just view the video without having to log in. It's possible that uStream might be requiring some people to have a uStream account to view the video - if you try that it might fix the problem.

I wish I could go to this--it sounds great! But I will be in Burbank until 6 pm, and I don't think I can get across town that fast. Let me know if you do something similar again.

I look forward to meeting people that show up and think the topics covered are perfect. My goal is to launch a program to inspire more kids to seek careers using math that include engineering, science, technology, physics and also math teachers.

Cross Campus is a coworking space. http://CrossCamp.us

There's a lot of street parking on meters. Just make sure to read the parking signs carefully and pay your meters.

I am powerful, but I have no idea how I'd be able to do that : ) I wish I could take credit for that. Is that talking about my iCal. I did just update that?

Hi, I'd love to have another meetup soon. I would be willing to schedule the meetup in the library or wherever is best. Any suggestions? Let me know and I will get it all squared away.

Parking for mothers beach may be $6.00 during the week. Parking at Cheesecake Factory was $4.50 about 5 years ago but may be $6.00 now is about a block away. If meeting room is open for people not part of the meetup group they don't charge a room fee.

Last winter a writers group meet in a public park near a cafe if it rains. If wifi is so critical is there a inexpensive portable wifi system the meetup group can ask for members to donate funds to buy? A boat owner cited a wifi extender from Canada that may allow using a library wifi in a park if legal? I believe it cost $40 several years back. If no portable wifi is available is a wifi chip available someone can put in a case with power supply & possibly sell a few/yr? Is a church acceptable?

I clicked Yahoo Community Room because it's almost August & discussion started in Janyary! It doesn't have wifi but its free. Anyone want to pay $100 or more to meet at Delores? If a few of us buy drinks the Spitfire grill has room for 20-50 with unlimited free parking. Mothers beach in Marina del Rey often has 2-4 table benches next to each other is free. SM observation deck has 9 tables for 4 may have wifi but no projection screen. Will it take a year to find a perfect place?

    July 24, 2012

  • Charles changed the location to YAHOO CENTER COMMUNITY ROOM

How about the Community Room of any of the local shopping malls? They are usually free and if anyone is interested I can check out the Westside Pavillion, and Santa Monica Place.

    June 4, 2012

  • Charles

This location discussion started in January? Location does not need to be perfect. If not a community center 2-3 tables @ Mothers Beach in Marina del Rey is a spectacular free location with permanent awning some go there year round for birthdays & other meetups with wind block. With no wifi or 110volts.
Or move tables together outdoors at the Cheesecake Factory 100 ft from beach. Hundreds of people buy their cheesecake to-go and sit at one of about 23 tables for 6-8 ea. on the beach itself.

Yahoo sounds good! Also, most of the shopping malls and parks have free community rooms. How about Santa Monica Place or West Side Pavilion? Would any of you like me to check those places?

I agree the SM library would be great but they are so expensive they are ridiculous. Are greedy libraries as bad as corporations seeking profits to repay investors investing in them? I counted the Yahoo community room has 65 chairs with tables so it's convenient to write notes. Yahoo doesn't charge for their room. I doubt they want some proof since ToastWriters and other meetup groups use the room also.

    April 10, 2012

  • Charles

The yahoo community meeting room is free and without someone pestering to buy food, drinks or snacks. I can call to arrange date. Sunday around 5 PM is after ToastWriters group. Address is 2500 Broadaway/

Good luck getting the SaMo library to host a non-profit mtg. They charge about $30/hr in my experience ... but Natalie knows better than I ... I led a Joomla certified non-profit, part of a big national/international user group. Library personnel were more than rude and dismissive, esp top man. They prohibit collecting fees, but charge a hefty fee. IF anyone more successful than I, pls lemme know! I've discussed this many times w/them ... they don't understand ... thanks!

Hi Alix, thanks for the background. I've done a lot of volunteer work at non profits myself.

Let me talk to my co-organizer about this and see if we can do a co-op with a few other groups to get a wider audience :) Thanks for reaching out to us.

I am running programs for a group of nonprofits that do disaster stuff in LA County. I also volunteer on the board of a nonprofit. Getting volunteers who have design and IT experience sufficient to present a good face to the public is hard, and I've been involved with school projects that, while well-intentioned, didn't help the marketing efforts either. We sometimes have to do it ourselves to get it done right.

    January 24, 2012

  • noel s.

Hi Alex, great idea. Do you currently have a non-profit yourself?
