North Sydney Meetup: WordPress 3.8

This month we'll take a look at what's new in WordPress 3.8, with a bunch of other "pro-tips" thrown in ;-)
We'll also take a look at some potential changes for WP 3.9.

What we usually do:

As always we'll aim to start at

6:30pm Welcome and Introductions

6:45pm A presentation or workshop

7:15pm A presentation or workshop

8:00pm Open conversations and questions

-- if your issues aren't covered above it's still a great time to come and ask any questions you want!

Pub! We usually head to the Gilroy Hotel in St Leonards for drinks and/or dinner after the meeting.

Nice to get an update on both where Wordpress is now from Kristen and where it is going from Wil. Thank you for your summaries and also indulging me with my questions about Memory and CPU bandwidth exhaustion. I wish now I had gotten to the presentation on "Heatbeat" from late last year because I would have been so much better prepared for the failure of my website and perchance may even have avoided the problem altogether.

      Hey John.

The heartbeat API "ticks" every 15 seconds by default although developers can change this in their plugins.

If you have multiple dashboard tabs open, only the one in focus ticks every 15 seconds. The others are reduced to a tick every 120 seconds and then logout after 5 mins.

So for the active dashboard tab, by math that's 5760 ticks over a 24 hour period (assuming somebody is using the tab for 24 hours straight).

If the tick transmits 10K per tick, that's 56.25Mb per day or an approximation of 1.65Gb per 30 days.

Of course somebody would be long dead from lack of food, water, sleep and tea before that happened but it should give you an idea.

So I don't think the WordPress heartbeat is responsible for your large bandwidth issues.

does anyone know of sites other than hostgator, blue host or go daddy that have similar plans. I have had a bad experience with blue host and looking to move forward and get started with my website

I use HostMarkaz - I find them reasonably priced but its the personal service that really won me over.

I use Visitek and get a good service. I should although express a very significant conflict of interest as it is my Brother who runs the Visitek ISP service out of Brisbane. Still I had far more problems with iinet including having to take them to the Odbudsman to get rid of them, that moving to my Brother's ISP service was really a no brainer. He services a number of clients (mainly in Queensland) but there is no obstacle to getting the service in Sydney as I have done for the last decade.

I use hostgator, but I lost a blog last year to caching issues.. I am still with them but have my blogs hosted with WP Engine .. they are fantastic.. site is fast and they worry about the caching, security etc..service is excellent as well (especially for a dumbie like me).
