Meeting Notes 7-14-11 at Caribou Coffee, Burke

Our mission statement was agreed on: "We will share our diverse knowledge of Wordpress and Facebook with all members, so that all, novice and guru alike, may grow and benefit." Motion by Jeanne and 2nd-John

Wordpress 101: We'll discuss Types, Installation, Posts, Pages, Themes, Widgets, Plug-ins.

Wordpress is a blogging platform & content management system (CMS). Great for small to medium sized websites & blogs. Not a good option for large sites.

CMS-content is managed/stored in a central database, & code (php) is used to utilize the content. Uses templates to display on desired pages.

.ORG vs .COM- .Org is more detailed and has more flexibility, use your domain url, access to thousands of free/fee based themes, plug-ins, & widgets or create your own.

- .Com is hosted sites, use your url.wordpress.com, limited selection of themes, plug-ins &
widgets.

Installing Wordpress-either by a hosted service control panel (Fantastico, Simple Scripts, Wordpress, etc.) or manually-Download Wordpress.org, FTP to your server, edit config file, run installation file.

You will be asked for username & password or database name & password. Run Install.

Settings-in Admin area offer customization.

Posts-Used for blog entries, Chronological in nature. Pages-Used for static content, hierarchal in nature.

Creating and editing posts & pages is just like using word with abilities such as BOLD, Italic, Underline, Colors, bullets and more.

Themes create a feel for your site that expresses an aspect of the content or enhances the look. Make sure they are compatible with your version of wordpress and that you update as needed.

Widgets provide content such as misc. text, adds feeds such as Flickrr, Twitter, Facebook, Del.icio.us, Video Player, etc. posts by Category.

Plug-ins extend the capabilities & functionality of Wordpress: Spam Blocker, SEO capabilities, Contact Forms, Auto-post to social networks, Database Backup, Google Analytics, Image Slideshows, Polls & Ratings, Mobile Phone Styler, Breadcrumb Navigation,Site Security, Chat, eCommerce.
