Going Mobile with CBS Local

Creating a mobile version of your WordPress site is as easy as installing and activating one of the many plugins available. Or if you want more control over the look, you can use a responsive theme. So why would the team at CBS Local go a totally different route, and choose to create a brand new mobile theme for their site?  At this months Meetup we're going to find out.

First, the team at CBS Local will walk us through their process, and why they decided to go the custom theme route. They'll give us insight into the thought process behind the design... how to decide which content to highlight... and why responsive design was not a good option.

After the Q&A, we'll get into some code. How to implement a theme switcher... CSS for mobile... and much more.

Friendly group and very informative presentations - lots of food for thought (and pizza!). Andy D. was particularly generous with his time answering questions and having discussions after the presentation.

Great presentation at an excellent meeting space! It was interesting to gain insight into the many valid reasons for choosing a mobile theme vs. responsive design; with the added bonus of learning more about WordPress.com VIP and how it can be utilized as a scalable and managed platform. Thanks to CBS Local for hosting and sharing.

An interesting look at an enterprise-level implementation of a mobile WordPress site. I took away some practical considerations for sites of any size. I also enjoyed hearing Tin Dizdarevic's presentation on Zemanta.
