About our Speakers:

Rindy Portfolio is a front-end web developer and writer specializing in the creation and maintenance of WordPress sites. He has been using WordPress since 2005 and is available for hire at crosscutsoftware.com

Krista Gonzalez is an independent web consultant and affiliate marketer who assists small businesses and individuals by using WordPress to create custom solutions that not only fit their budget, but also enhance their professional image. When she isn't introducing people to WordPress, she can be found working at 720creations.com.

Dana Skallman came to WordPress by way of tinkering with the outer-space of the internet and all the possibilities it holds. It wasn't long before she realized that her zeal for promoting equitable access to technology, without big business-reliance, lies in working with open source software. Dana can be found at Glocal Web/Tech, a collective that builds web-based organizational infrastructure and provides ongoing support.

Kevin Cristiano has been working with WordPress since 2005. He spent many years working on MSSQL databases before finding WordPress. He now develops and consults on WordPress with clients primarily in the non-profit and publishing related industries. Kevin can be contacted through our community site.

I'm having trouble getting contact forms to work. I have the latest version of Wordpress installed. Any suggestions?

I thought the presenters were both savvy and direct about the topics presented. However, I wish there would have been a little more enthusiasm and charisma behing the talks. Overall I was very impressed with most of the presenters.

Really enjoyed presenting to the group and hope to do it again soon!

Great presentations! Though I'm not a beginner, I learned a lot, especially new plugins and resources.

The speakers were very good and were easy for WP virgins (me included) to follow. I still don't understand the difference between a plug-in and a widget, but I did get a decent understanding of what WP offers.

  • Michael Hillmeyer

    Great introduction to WordPress

Great class geared to Beginners - AND so happy it will be posted as a video in case I missed something.

  • James Protano

Excellent decision to come. Very thorough and organized, you can ask questions you have, it's only $5 and they supply you with pizza! It's like you get paid to come! ha

The venue is the best, and even though I'm not a beginner (this event was aimed towards newer users) I picked up something useful from each of the speakers.

very helpful for beginners -- but you have to stop people from asking questions every minute! I had to leave before the "Tips and Tricks" part, which I really wanted to hear, because the Meetup already had gone on past 8:30. Teachers need to get up at 6AM.

really good for newbies getting into wordpress; not terribly helpful for other audiences. at least this particular meetup.

questions should be limited to broad questions that could benefit the entire audience, as opposed to very specific personal use-case questions. save those for after the event or as a follow-up to people you meet there.

  • Louis Mercurio

Informative for someone like me who is not a programmer but wants to understand the workings of WP.

    March 21, 2012

  • Kpana

Good information shared but it did run very long. Had to leave after 9 and it was still going on. Hoping the information is posted so I can get what I missed.

Confirmed somethings I already knew, and I learned some things I didn't . Thanks sooo much for putting this together. The presenters were great! Now I'd just like to learn how to build custom themes. (just one more thing -- I didn't know there would be pizza and soda, but if you do it again next time, if you offer drinks, can you include something like water or seltzer? - non-sweet is my point... Many thanks!)

As my first event, I was very impressed. A welcoming atmosphere, followed by presentations pitched at a level to match the audience. The organizers did a great job of keeping things flowing, their experience shows. I felt not only vastly more informed by the evening but also reassured that there is a large community of interested and empathetic WordPress users within easy reach. The mid-event pizza break was a pleasant surprise and a nice touch, giving people a chance to socialize while keeping their blood sugar up enough to focus on challenging subject matter. My only criticism is that the night went on a little too long, but that has more to do with the enthusiasm of some attendees than anything else. And it's hard to fault anyone for that.

location at CBS is fabulous. I find it impossible to believe that people could not find it. The theme of the meeting was great - but the sections should have been more thorough - it was almost all hints and tips and not thorough enough for most people to take away and put into use. Also, suggest having the break shorter. people got tired and had to leave early.

Perfectly professional. Well organized and hugely informative presenters.

The beginners course exceeded my expectations.

I am a long time user of WordPress (over 5 years) but never had any formal training - totally self-taught and I found this meeting valuable. Some of the basics that were presented were things I never really dealt with and this filled in the blanks. I had to leave before the end (9:00 ish) and I did feel the questions from about 8:45 were too detailed with issues specific to the user who asked. They should have been taken separately from the group or taken after the presentation was finished. I missed the tips and tricks but will look for anything that gets posted on that.

Speakers had good information and were very willing to share. All in all, it was a very worthwhile night for me - thank you!

Such wonderful information and expertise shared with a really good spirit to it all. The price is just right and there was pizza! (I agree on the addition of water but hey! it's still great.) One thing - I know name tags may be (?) sort of geeky but they do help 'break the ice' in meeting others, seeing what people do and what their blog is, what their twitter is. Other blogging events I've gone to have done this and think it sort of helps. Overall, superb!

Hello wpnyc....I have been attending the meetups and doing projects in wordpress for a little over 1 year....I always attend the meetup because I get great tips. Last night was no exception, lots of great plugin tips that I didn't know about.

Greatly informative for a beginner! Thanks!

    March 21, 2012

Extremely informative and helpful. The presenters were well-prepared, articulate, patient and encouraging. I'm very glad that I attended.

  • Joly MacFie

Comprehensively covered the ground. Some great tips. + Famous Original Ray's Pizza. - Could have done with some Poland Spring to drink.

    March 21, 2012

  • David Concepcion

Yes, the presentations were informative, pithy and to the point. The address I was given to find the place was extremely hard to find. It had me way off where I was supposed to be on my iphone. Had to ask several people to find it.

    March 21, 2012

  • Anthony N. Fagiani

Actually the building doesn't seem to have an adress on the 52nd St. side, but I asked this homeless guy sitting on a pile of cardboard boxes and he knew right where it was.

    Studio 19 ----- 51 W 52 - so a space got dropped somewhere, I guess. Meetup.com mobile bug?

    March 21, 2012

  • Lori at PeriodicMedia

Dawn, I had the same problem. Address showed up on my iphone as 1951 W 52nd. Took getting out at the wrong stop blocks away before I realized... there's no such address. Made me 15 minutes late!

  • Anthony N. Fagiani

Great introduction to a hairy topic. This is exactly what I needed to launch my author blog and tweak it to maximum functionality.

  • Steve Bruner

Really great job by all four presenters.

Didn't attend as I blindly went to the location that showed up in the link on my iPhone, 52nd St. between 8th/9th Aves. My fault as I know 51 W. 52nd Street couldn't be that far west--and I didn't arrive early. But, FYI, in case it was a general iPhone thing and an unexpected number of folks didn't show.

Let me know if there's any openings, I'm working at the restyle of Trendland a WP website with 1 million unique visit a month, and I'd totally love to participate to this meeting, to learn and share! Thanks.

  • Lori at PeriodicMedia

Hi! Does anyone know: would it be beneficial to bring a laptop so that one could, I dunno... "follow along", edit our WP sites? Or is it more of a sit-and-listen gig? Will there be wifi there? Thanks.

    March 20, 2012

  • Agatha

Is this being recorded? Great workshop, bummer I can't attend

    March 20, 2012

  • David Concepcion

This is my first WP meet up. What would be a good time to show up if you have already paid and RSVP? In an effort to get a good seating.

    March 20, 2012

  • Ann Bingley Gallops

Looking forward to tonight; what time do you expect the meeting to wrap up?

    March 20, 2012

Hello. I'm on the waiting list. Please let me know if spots open up. I would love to attend, thanks!
