Sex, Violence and Progress: “The Fool’s Progress” by Edward Abbey
These subjects always make a great TV series or movie and our club is pursuing these exciting subjects through our recent reading selections. To me, the written word seems to provide more entrainment than most made for TV series and, remember, everyone always says: “the book was better than the movie.”
These interesting contemporary American authors have explored most notably: 1) sex in “Girls in Trucks” and 2) violence in “Paradise.” Now we move on to Progress – the evolution of life and the journey. This is, of course, through one male author’s perspective that we try to understand this character’s journey in life (which includes both of the prior subjects as well – such as, shooting the frig).
Speaking of progress, in the authors on words:
“Which was a worthier technological achievement, the moon landing or the invention of bread? The bake oven or the nuclear reactor? Only a fool would hesitate to answer.”
I don’t agree with his haste in the decision, but I think the questions are fair questions about progress. Let’s read the book and answer the questions posed.
What is progress?
