Explore The Ethiopian Highlands with Gwen Curry

Ethiopia is often equated with famine but it is a land of haunting biblical landscapes, beautiful people and exotic birds and animals. Legendary names that live on in this ancient country are: the Kingdom of Aksum, Saint George, the Queen of Sheba and Haillie Selassie. Ethiopia still follows the Julian calendar, more than seven years behind our own Gregorian calendar.

I travel to Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, then north to Bahir Dar on the shores of Lake Tana, source of the Blue Nile. Finally, to the Simien Mountains, land of the Gellada baboons.

Gwen Curry is a contemporary artist, traveler and photographer.

The presentations will be held at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in the Discovery Room from here on in. This will give us some consistency and a regular space without interruption. I hope you will agree $5 is very inexpensive for the 2-3 hours of quality entertainment and socializing you will have.

We'll meet and mingle, have a drink or two starting at 5:30 and expect the presentation to get started at about 6:30. There is tons of parking but please consider a cab if you are going to be drinking.

The $5 goes towards covering the cost of the room. There is also a cash bar available. Can't wait to see you there.

Some people asked me to post the fiction book(s) I referred to that were based in Ethiopia - "Sweetness in the Belly" by Camilla Gibb and "Say You're One of Them" by Uwem Akpan. Enjoy!

Sounds like it was a good talk and I am sorry that I missed it. I am a bit confused on the emails I am receiving on cancellations due to noise? Seems like the talk went well?

I attended the Victoria Travelers' Meet-Up discussion this evening at the Victoria Yacht Club. I found that Gwen Curry, the presenter of her Ethiopian Highlands trip to be extremely interesting - her knowledge of the country was impressive and her photography of the areas she traveled through, was very interesting. I doubt whether I will ever get to Ethiopia, however, I now have a glimpse of what the geography is like - the people - and the lifestyle. Thanks to Josh Prowse for organizing this event tonight!!! I thoroughly enjoyed it!!

I am sorry but I will not be able to make it tonight. I have a flu bug and don't want to spread the germs with my coughing.

I'm sorry to cancel, but my fiance's father is dying and we're flying out to Ontario on Friday. We'll return a week before our wedding, therefore there is just too much to do in the next couple of days. I was in Ethiopia last year, sad to miss this.

Hi Gwen! This will be my first meet-up visit & looking forward to it. I do have a question - I invited someone to come along who is not on the meet-up & now I see that you have a wait list. I'll notify him that if he shows, he might get turned back? Any suggestions, as I'm sure there will be several people who won't attend?

So how does this waiting list work ?

I have never been to Ethiopia, however, it sounds fascinating and I am looking forward to learning more about this country and meeting other "world travelers".
