Nogabe - Madagascar Fabulously agile Malagasy guitarist and his trio
Nogabe was born in Madagascar and started playing various instruments from a young age. He moved to Asia in late 70's and recorded his first album there. He is now based in London is working on a new album 'Miraisahina (united) with his trio.
Nogabe's guitar picking and amazing voice combined with the deep sound of Calabash played by Khalifa Conte and the magic of Mehdi Ganjvar's fingers on Darbuka, makes for a unique sound
Such is the abundance of unique flora and fauna to be found on Madagascar that ecologists have referred to the sizeable Indian Ocean island as the 'eight continent'. Musicologists might well agree.
The island's distinctive musical identity separates it from both mainland Africa and the rest of the planet, even when its musicians are playing an instrument as familiar as the acoustic guitar. This is Nogabe Randriaharimalala's weapon of choice and he makes it sound unlike it does anywhere else. Its spotless, bell-clear tone is matched by a dazzling agility and liquidity that a million bedroom singer-songwriters could only dream of.
Nogabe: vocals, acoustic guitar
Khalifa Conte: calabash, djembe, talking drum
Mehdi Ganjvar: darbouka, bongos, shaker
