Currently formulating the framework for a novel but would be good to clear a couple short story ideas that have been knocking around for a while. It was a symbol not of their love, but of his puerile attachment to his mother – and his mother's unrelenting hold over him. Karen couldn't find a way to deny it. On the eve of their engagement party, which to her was like a coming out, a triumph of her destiny, May had presented Jonny with a surprise gift - a shiny toy car, the vintage Beetle of his dreams. Karen's heart had dropped like a stone and her breath arrested when he led her, proudly, to check it out. ‘Does it work?’ she'd asked feebly, flicking back her head of strong, healthy hair. She felt both guilty and put out. The ring – May's mother's – had been uncomfortable enough (it barely squeezed on), and she'd tried to accept it in the spirit that Jonny had intended, as the key to his family's ever-warm bosom. But she KNEW this gas-guzzling indulgence, this poison-spewing relic was a declaration of war. Raising the crowbar high above her hooded head, she smashed it again into the hood. Man, she sure didn't feel guilty now.
