Critique & Goal Setting at Enigma Bookstore

PLEASE READ:

Welcome all writers and thank you for joining! (Find us at the back of the store.)

Our agenda is as follows:

7-7:15 - chat, introductions (newcomers please be on time for intros)

7:15-8:00 - set writing goals for upcoming week & share obstacles

8:00-9:00 - provide feedback for the two or three chosen pieces

9:00-9:15 - chat, discuss group matters, and choose works for next week

How to receive feedback:

IF you would like to be critiqued, you must attend at least one meetup to become familiar with and understand the format of the meetings. You do NOT have to be critiqued if you wish not to be. In the preceding meetup we choose two writers to be critiqued. The third work is a backup if time permits. Please read them all.

How to post:

1) Post only if you have been chosen to be critiqued and by noon on the preceding Friday. (For critique outside of meetups please post in "Pages" in the menu above.)

2) Before Posting:  Length: 15 - 20 pgs (can be shorter)

                                   Double-spaced (unless for aesthetics)

11-12 point font (no smaller or larger)

                                   Number your pages

3) Post in Files under More tab with this description:

Name

Meetup date

Description of your work

Type of feedback you would like

(As description box allows. Also post in the document.)

When critiquing: (Always use "I" when critiquing)

1) Each person is allotted 5 mins. The writer is also allotted 5 mins to respond after everyone has spoken.

2) Share what worked and/or what you liked/ enjoyed and why.

3) Offer suggestions/ constructive criticism for improvement.

*Suggested donation is $5 for the Enigma Bookstore  for being kind enough to let us use their space. Or you may purchase an item or a book to your liking. Donations will be collected on the premises.

See you there,

i am at a point in my writing where i have several projects started. i need some help! i really feel compelled to become prolific. i want to be writing every day like i'm possessed. this is how to be an artist. i am challenging someone to compete with me. someone? some 2? 3? MORE? i hope i get a response! i'm not planning on writing shlock. i am serious. who, whom, who, whom, who????? WHO?

I can't compete. I need sleep. I'm struggling to write 1/2 an hour each day.

i have decided that i am not going to seek being published. maybe i will do that some day. for now, i am going to write like i'm crazy (wait, i am crazy) in that case, i'm going to continue writing like i'm crazy but a lot more. when i have several hundred pounds of poems and thousands of pounds of stories etc, if i'm still alive i'll load it all up and take some of it to a publisher and say "here".

Good. I think I should write my thoughts down like I was told to do in workshop classes at school and the way Dan has been doing because I ramble off and sound like a nutcase.

Jessica et al... I'm away in Atlantic City and we're not heading Home till tomorrow. I might but be back in time. Also, barely have had time to write this weekend or post a new blog.

    April 27

    • Jane K.

Understood and hope you can make it. Otherwise, you should rest after a long weekend.

spent about 20 minutes writing today. it is something new and different. for those who think my work tends to be sort of saying things in a non direct, round about way that skirts issues, this one is not. (dan.2).

Thanks everyone for giving me different perspectives on the whole "my voice is not my voice" thing I was talking about. Still, I haven't been writing and I think I'm deliberately avoiding it. Usually, if I don't write, I'm revising past works, but I don't have the strength to look at anything I've written right now. I'm having a hard time getting past my thoughts and letting the creativity flow. I'm trying to push past it but the blockage seems too great. Any advice? Or do I just need time?

    April 23

    • Jane K.

Hmm...maybe we both just needed someone to push us or nudge us and then we'll find our own way of doing it. But I promise you, we do heed your words. :)

For me, reading what you wrote gave me the gist of what you were saying which was to set aside the thoughts with a distraction and write. So I did that based on what you said, just not word for word.

i still think that no matter who suggests it, you should try the wasabi - i know sooner or later, i will

Hey Everyone: I hope you've been sticking to your writing goals. I've been journaling everyday like a fiend- at least 30 minutes of concentrated emotional outpouring. I also feel a great NEED to work on some "public" pieces, so I feel fairly confident that I'll accomplish that portion of my writing goals this week.

can't sleep. feeling a bit angry and sad. rearranging an old poem which i've placed in the version of "smoldering" i am presently revising and plan to be a part of my 2nd S-P book which I am presently compiling. this one i'll have to sell, or why bother? right? I have a working title, but i know that it might raise some eyebrows and bring on an undesired reaction which is connected to why i am feeling a bit angry and sad so i won't tell - at least for the time being. we once spoke of revising old work and i know i said i would not do that, but read above; i'm in the process of doing just that, right now! go figure. no, don't bother. revising anytime must be good if that is what you want to do. i therefore retract my opposition to it, that i expressed previously.
