Rochester Writers' Group brings together area writers for critique sessions. To become a member, you must submit a sample of your writing (e.g. an entire short story, chapter of a novel, etc). You don't need to have been previously published, but you do need to have been crafting your work -- notes, ideas, outlines are not sufficient. No one can give you effective feedback if there isn't enough characterization, plot, style development or polish to be able to comment on strong and weak areas.
In order to ensure that we have sufficient time to prepare useful critiques to everyone in the group, we've had to limit our membership to fiction writers only at this time. We're open to genres (contemporary, fantasy/science fiction, mystery/suspense, historical, chick lit, etc.) but we don't currently have the necessary experience to delve deeply into other styles such as: non-fiction, children's lit, poetry, fan fiction, screenwriting, and other forms of writing.
If you click to join us as a member, you'll need to submit your writing sample within two days to email@example.com. Again, the time for submission is short because we don't want people to click and then dash off something to fulfill the requirement. You should already have a completed work that simply may need a little revision or a story idea that is ready for first draft. Send us a piece that you feel reflects your interests and talent. We're serious about committing time and effort to the writing process, so we hope that you are too.
We meet weekly, alternating Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Members aren't required to come every week -- many only come for either the Tuesday or the Wednesday meetings.
