January Practice:  Power Core Yoga

This whole month of January our practice will be focused on waking up our core with the help of the Asanas.

Our core is the literal center of our balance and strength and it supports us physically in our yoga practice. When you step off of the mat, there are lots of other good reasons to be strong in the core, perhaps most obviously to support the lower back.

Here are some benefits of a healthy core:

1. Stabilize Lower Back

Core exercises make the lower back stronger and healthier. With a stronger back, you will be less prone to lower back pain that is usually a result of carrying too much weight, or pressure on the lower back. A stronger core will allow for normal spinal function.

2. Improve balance and coordination

As the back and abdominal area becomes stronger, the body also experiences an improvement in balance and coordination. 

3. Strengthen the body

It is not only the abdominals and the lower back that core exercises can strengthen. They can also make the entire body stronger. Evidence to this is when you engage in physical activities or sports. After doing several core exercise workouts, you will find that your sports-playing capabilities will be much better. Whether it is surfing, running, skiing, or cycling, you will see tremendous improvement in how you play these sports.

4. Promote better breathing

Another benefit of core exercises is improved lung capacity. Core muscles are connected to the diaphragm so working out these muscle groups will enhance one’s ability to inhale and exhale fully. If the body is able to take in more oxygen, the heart is able to pump more blood, so there will be a significant improvement in the overall performance of the body.


Make it a habit to practice yoga everyday or at least 3 times a week. If for some reason you cannot join a yoga class in a studio, then take your practice at home. Doing 5 sun salutations A and 5 sun salutation B (about 10 minutes)  is enough to keep your body tuned. Make this part of your daily routine like brushing your teeth. Practicing daily at home is an essential step toward deepening one`s experience, because the motivation to practice alone can be difficult to sustain, home practice says a lot about an individual's strong motivation and high level of commitment.

    Hi all. In addition to this practice, we will also explore the different variation of crow pose (crow, side crow, baby crow etc. ). Crow pose uses a lot of core strength and arm strength. Modifications are given to beginners.
