MINDFUL MUSIC AND MEDITATION THIS COMING SATURDAY IN NYC
The Open Music Ensemble, a cooperative of professional acoustic improvised music players, is pleased to offer an evening of Music and Meditation on Saturday, September 7, from 7 to 9 PM, as a follow on to the talk that afternoon by Thich Nhat Hanh at the Beacon Theater. Our program is suitable for meditators at all levels, from beginners to advanced students.
First, following a period of silence, a short meditation instruction will be offered, then members of the audience are invited to place their attention on the sounds and silences created for them by the Ensemble while they meditate, or to engage I other contemplative practices of their choice. Special instructions for listening meditation may be offered during the program. Finally, after a period of silence, participants are invited to share and discuss their experiences. Musicians will include June Ando on koto, Nicole DeVault on harp and voice, Philip Foster with spoken word, Nicholas Handahl on transverse flute, John Murchison on upright bass, and Ken Silverman on guitar and oud.
The Ensemble has presented this program since 2008 at the Shambhala Center, The Interdependence Project. The Jewish Community Center, the Tibet House, and the New York Insight Meditation Center. Roshi Joan Halifax, abbot of the Upaya Zen Center, described the program as “wonderful”. Many have found the program facilitates a deepening of the practice and an opportunity to experience mindfulness in a new way.
The program will take place at the New York Insight Meditation Center, 28 West 27th Street, 10th floor, buzzer #27. $15 admission. Please RSVP at www.meetup.com/musicandmeditation.
