"Awesome & Extreme" Mt. bike or Hike

  • December 8, 2013 · 8:45 AM
  • William H. Kain County Park/ Lake Redman Dam Parking Lot

9AM sharp, "Awesome & Extreme" Mt. bike or Hike, Lake RedMan, Williams & Nixon. In the morning 8-9 miles circle around Lake Redman with lots of vertical, obstacles and 2 long deep dark scary wet tunnels!? Approx 3-hrs, noon lunch @cars in parking lot.

Helmet, gloves and water proof boots suggested , a minimum of hat, gloves, & headlight required! Not for the clostrophobic!

Afternoon/12:30/1pm, another 8 miles less difficult, do lake Williams & Nixon County Park with "Park Naturalist Amber Carothers for a hike in the woods to discover how the animals have prepared for, and are coping with, the changing seasons, 2:30-4pm. Back @parking lot around sunset, 5pm. Eatery/drinkery sportsbar after if anyone is interested.

FYI, Hiked Redman and did a bunch of trail maintenance. 1-guy loaded his MTB when I arrived @9am. 2-MTB's on the trails & no park ranger as usual. Small tunnel was fine, 1-2" as usual. Large tunnel 4-6" and would have been challenging and maybe wet! @29'F! Snowed about 2" 2nd half and ontop of a layer leaves, would have been interesting sliding down the hills with both wheels locked up!
Worst was the "Morons" that shouldn't be allowed on the road in snow! Backed up S.George st South 2-miles, a parking lot! Never seen anything like it in my entire driving days! Morons sliding around or just parkin in the road! Same thing many places. PA needs to call a "State of Emergency" during all snow fall!

It's unfortunate that it will be the "Rangers" preventing "Both" rides. We could still hike it, still very cool! but not sure how high the water will be. Tiptoe thru with my 8" boots!?
I'll check it in the morning.

7 PM Saturday - I just called the York County Parks and all trails are closed at all parks for horseback and mountain bike riding. I don't think that'll be reversed by 8 AM tomorrow morning, sad to say.

Hey you guys could have saved face by calling the park office. ALL York county park trails are currently closed, even Rocky Ridge which almost never closes down. With the weather as it is and the forecast I'd give it about a 5 percent chance of being open on Sunday morning.
Oh, and if you decide to go anyway, be advised that they will cite you if you're nabbed. They wait at the parking lot for you till you come back. And they tell me that the house nearest the dam parking lot is the ranger's house, so it'd be pretty easy for them.

    Darren, Don't feel bad!
Believe it or not the biggest issue is actually the "Water Level"! going thru the 1st tunnel! I know it rained alot today.
I know the water level in the 3' x4' high tunnel, is probably "WAY ABOVE my 6" boots"!!!!
Most likely will have to "Cancel" due to "Not wanting to be FLUSHED down a Toilet"!!! or worse "Pluggin it"!!!

Never seen a ranger there! Sunday forecast has not changed, Sat looks like "Snow"! We'll probably be the only crazy people there!

Wild, Just be advised that if the weather is inclement, the park rangers may close down the trails. Call[masked] (the park office) to get the latest low down on trails in Kain park.

I'll definitely be there. Take it easy on my though as I've only been out a few time this past summer. I've hiked that route a few times and wouldn't believe it could be biked if I hadn't seen this meetup. Looking forward to the challenge.

    Weather will be "Challenging"!
60% chance of a Wintry mix of precipitation. Highs in the low 30s and cloudy at least, & no sun. I'll be there wearing as much goretex as I can, hat, gloves, clear eye protection & waterproof boots.
Precip will also makes trails slick & hey maybe the tunnel rivers will be higher! Should be interesting!

The morning ride is "Awesome & Extreme", just like I said. Has lots of vertical up & down, lots of obstacles. The "Tunnels" are wicked cool!!! 1st one is the toughest, Helmet, gloves and water proof boots suggested , a minimum of hat, gloves, & headlight required! Not for the clostrophobic! It's about 3' wide, 4' tall, and 200' long! and water flowing thru it! It's "Awesome"! 2nd tunnel is similar but wide enough to drive a car thru but still ariver flows thru it! Also "Awesome"!

    Hi Bill

Trying to talk my son into doing this. He has the mt. bike, however I have a hybrid and not sure it would be suitable? Plus how extreme are the obstacles or the length of the tunnel.

    Bill,
The 9 AM ride sounds interesting to me. I haven't had the MTB out since our trip up to Allegripis trails this summer. Weather is kinda dictating a shift from road to trails this time of year. I take it that the "Redman Dam" parking lot is the one below the dam, between Redman and Williams, and not the boat launch. If not, let me know please.
