Not sure who is going or not.....I personally am out for this one, was hoping the cold or whatever I picked up a few days ago would run it's course but...well what can you do? Two couples are still going to be on the site I mentioned before on loop I.....good news is the national park opened this morning, so all access points in question should be available for the weekend.

Due to schedule conflict, I can not make it this time. I love and miss the sound of ocean waves - I may have to come here by myself in another day. Enjoy. John

Hi Mike, What's the latest? I am Looking to see some happy faces this weekend. I'll be one of them.

Debi, the latest update is still in hopes for better weather next weekend. I'm sorry for any confusion, I posted as soon as I found out. It does not sound like any changes would have worked with your need to request time off so far in advance.....It's going to be a mess down there this weekend and people simply did not want to drive all that way to spend it in a tent or lose money on their site reservations, so they changed to the 18th which at least by the weather channel forecast looks more promising. Beach camping trips are tricky that way, everyone wants it sunny and nice, me I'm used to wet weekends...

Hi Mike, Thanks for the update. Going to spend it further south for my weekend off. Was so looking farward to meet/greet ya all. It's so lonely here in York w/no aftr work hr friends. Maybe nxt yr will be better.

      October 10, 2013

  • Debi

Thanks,Mike. Will be looking for your update,Wed. As I needed to request my one weekend off a month, at least a month in advance, rain, snow, sleet or hail will not allow me to alter my weekend off, just what I do with my weekend off. So if the decision to change to the next weekend, I won't be able to change my weekend off.

Sheeesh! Another update.....reservations can be moved, some campers have already done so in hopes of better weather to the following weekend...Oct. 18-19.

Greg, Mark, Art...anyone possibly planning the Asseteaque island camper this coming weekend. The weather forecast is for 70% rain all weekend. Where rain is normally a good thing in OUR paddling world...when I go to the beach I like it sunny and dry. That's just me.....if it's going to be a wet one, I'de personally rather seek out some white water. Another thing is the national park which contains all the trails is shut down i'm guessing, so if you go it may require seeking alternative bay access.....I will probably make my decision by Wed.

State park is open, we may have to divert for kayak launching, but no biggie :-)

Not sure about the campground but I think the national park is closed/gated due to the government shutdown.

I will be there Fri close to noon. I have a Chevy Equinox. Will go to Loop I meet/greet. Find nxt step to weekend.

    October 4, 2013

  • Mike

Everyone will need to call the State park to rez your camping sites, not sure of the prices as they change through the fall.....everyone thus far is on Loop I. Also, there are no real meeting times as people roll in at all different times on Friday. Saturday, we will probably organize a paddle trip on the bay side, and some will want to bike at different times.....most activities will be impromptu as has been my experience on Asseteaque.

I'm in. What time/where do we meet up on Fri?

OK.....The friends I'll be camping with have decided on the Oct. 11-12 weekend at the Assateague STATE campground. Not sure of the site number yet, but they will probably seek the loop with electric. There will of course be plenty of sites available on the dunes. I always suggest not only boats, but bikes as well. I take a touring boat for the bay, a white water boat for the surf, and fore mentioned bike.

Been there before, would go again. Yes, would need more info....date/$$$/sharing tents[had to give my other one away-haven't replaced it yet]. Carpooling/meeting there?
Even would like to be on list for nxt yr if this doesn't work out pr Callie's note.

Hey there. Sounds like a great weekend. I'd be interested if its the end of September.

    September 11, 2013

  • Mike

Guys, I have a group camping on the island either the last weekend of Sept. or first weekend of Oct. I will wait to get a projected 10 day forecast to decide which.....this is the only way you can attempt to insure good weather.....for kayaking, let it rain, but for the BEACH...I WANT IT NICE AND SUNNY :-) I will finalize my groups plans and post again. I like to camp at the State campground, and by then it's first come first serve I believe...better facilities.
Kayaks for the bay.....bikes for the island, and white water or sit on top boats for the surf.....there is nothing cooler than sitting out beyond the breakers with dolphins swimming all around you!

If a confirmed date could be agreed upon, I will know better if I can attend. However, I am putting my name in to hold a place. Sounds cool.

This is not a trip for beginning campers there are only portapotties and a fire ring. No Facilities at the back country sites.

    January 9, 2013

  • Ron V.

I have floated to the back country sites before. You can canoe/kayak in Best to do early or late in the season because of mosquitoes. SERIOUS BIG HUNK'N MOSQUITOES. Plan early or late. Leave the state park just before high tide some of the areas are too shallow for even canoes. Fill up with drinking water at the state park. It is a great trip lots of fun and some great communing with nature.

You can always get adjoining sites, very easy to do in mid-late sept.....plus by waiting till then or even early oct. the bugs are gone and the water is warm.....been there and done that :-)
