kayaking

Kayak the Conodoguinet from Conodoguinet Youth Park to Siebert Park, approx 7 miles.

Once we meet at the put in, we'll drop all the boats off, and then shuttle as many vehicles as possible to the take out.  After the paddle, a couple of people will need to shuttle the people whose cars are still at the put in back to the start.

Wish the weather clears up and you have a good time. I would like to try it another day. Thanks.

I might not be coming if weather condition is difficult. However I do like to try paddling this water trail and I can rearrange my schedule in order to go tomorrow, if weather permits. Will anyone be interested? We will need someone who knows the route and the put-in pull-out spots though.

    July 13, 2013

    • Barbara K.

I agree, Steve. There are no storms on the radar at all.

I will be there. Will see how it goes.

Its raining here in Boiling Springs. Can we do this tomorrow?

    July 13, 2013

    • Barbara K.

I work tomorrow, so that won't work for me. It seems doable today.

is anyone else having doubts this morning rain does not bother me but thunder storms????

    July 13, 2013

It looks good. Maybe a little drizzle, but no thunderstorms this morning.

Have to cancel. Was just surprisingly invaded by several long distance friends as a surprise. None kayak and one doesn't swim. Will have to catch you on another trip. I hope you have enough water and a great day.

Hi. I am new to kayaking, this website, and the group. Is this event still in place for tomorrow morning and the location is the same (youth park)? Thanks

    July 12, 2013

    • Steve M.

Yes it is still in place and we will put in at Youth Park.

      July 12, 2013

  • Karen

Being new to the area, is the address above exactly where the put in point is? or where we are to meet? I just want to make sure I'm not searching or looking in the wrong place a 9:55 am. Thanks

    • Steve M.

Oops. Wertzville Road is PA 944 NOT PA 941.

      July 12, 2013

    • Steve M.

Arghh. You go EAST on Wertzville from I-81. Sorry about that. I won't post messages before my coffee ever again. I promise.

I can not make it to this event, If someone has a way to transport my Kayak that doesn't include some rope and the roof of a car.. Email me and make arrangements to pick it up at my house in Carlisle and you're welcome to use it. ( its the RED Kayak in the tubing picture at the top of this page)

  • Barbara K.

Thank you, Steve, for scouting that out. We had discussed possibly moving the put in /take out points, but we are going to stick with the original plan of Conodiguinet Youth Park to Siebert Park. See you all then....

    1 · July 11, 2013

  • Steve M.

I live about 2 miles from the proposed take out point and checked things out last night. There is plenty of parking at the put in and parking for 6 or so at the take out point.

The creek water level is about 2 feet in the runs, deeper in the pools and less in the riffles (rapids). We may hit bottom in the riffles and will have to walk 5 or so feet to get through the riffles, but I think that will happen only a couple of times in this section. I'm looking forward to the trip!

You guys might try Blue Mountain Outfitters for rentals, not sure how they structure it, whether you pick up and drop off or if you need to be on one of their trips....but try them...they are in Marysville[masked]

Bummer but I understand. Thanks for confirming.

I would like to join too, but I don't have a kayak. :/

Plesae confirm this is a no rental event. I'd love to join but I'd need to rent. Thanks.

    July 9, 2013

It is a no rental event. Thanks!

OOPS! Almost forgot...for the conodoquinet here is the link to the guage you NEED to watch.....http://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/n...

    July 9, 2013

  • Mike

Either way, and since you have a sizable group I would suggest a backup plan. Another note.....of all the streams the club does, the Yellow Breeches is mainly spring fed which is why you can pretty much make it down there year round. Hope this info helps and have fun where ever you all go :-)

    July 9, 2013

  • Mike

Hey gang.....I only offered options as you may not have enough water, Ed Gertler's guide book "Keystone Canoeing" is a must have for any paddler...anyway he describes this section as "canoeable usually throughout March-mid May, but in a wet year it may stay up until July. USGS guage at Hogestown should read 1.7 feet. FYI.....I just called Blue Mountain Outfitters, they keep local tabs on creek levels and know this one very well...the guage (which trip leaders need to know how to use ) is currently riding on the brink of being able to get down or being a scrape fest.....1.6 ish You could do it OK today, but by Saturday without a sustained heavy rain, they do not recommend it. So I am bailing on this section and go where I know there is water.

    July 9, 2013

  • Barbara K.

Mike, it was great to get your input. The paddle that you mention sounds appealing with an instructor/guide along. I would like to hear from those attending concerning how they feel about the location. Folks?

Also appreciated Mike's comments concerning the water level of the Conodoguinet. Mike, would it be possible to keep this event as it was originally proposed? It was the lower area of the Con. (where I would assume the water is deeper) to City Island. What do you think about that event, and would you be willing to lead it?

@Steve and Ken- I would think about 3 hours.

    1 · July 8, 2013

  • Steve

Any idea how long it takes? I have a commitment at 2pm and would like to do this as well.

    1 · July 7, 2013

    • Ken

I have the exact same question.

      July 8, 2013

If you guys still want to change the location I know the Susquehanna at all levels and pretty much all locations, been leading trips and teaching there for years. I would suggest meeting in Wrightsville at the parking lot/ boat ramp of John wrights Restaurant. From there you have several options with or without shuttle, and it's safe enough for anyone with time constraints to paddle out early. The Condo and Gunpowder creeks are VERY rain dependent and I would guess by Sat. the 13th will be bony....ie scrapy all the way down....nothing is worse than paddling virtually dry creek beds.....Condo and GP are also pretty far from York area. Let me know...

    • Marie

Another paddle opportunity with Mike I have to miss.....

      July 8, 2013

  • Barbara K.

I have changed the location since I am not experienced on the Susquehanna. If anyone else who is coming does have experience there, we can certainly change it back,

Assuming we are meeting at the put in point, what is the plan to get back to our vehicles?

    July 7, 2013

    • Barbara K.

I believe that someone will shuttle a couple of vehicles to the take out spot so that we can be returned to our cars.

      July 7, 2013

  • Marie

@barb: Why don't you pick a spot to put in and take out? Here is a link to the map; page 4-7 is the detailed map with the list of access points? http://fishandboat.com/watertra...

  • Heather G.

Doesn't look as if we can rent a kayak. Hope to join you guys when I'm not VSupervising.

    July 6, 2013

  • Barbara K.

Will the person who first posted this event please get the gps coordinates to Marie so we can add the specific location? Thanks!

    July 6, 2013

  • Heather G.

On the 13th I am a Visitation Supervisor, but this still might be do-able. I have two kayaks, but will need a third. Is a rental place around our drop-off point? If we put the kayaks in upstream and stop at City Island, how do we re-meet our cars? This is my first 'down-river' kayaking...please don't be offended by my questions.

Thanks, Bruce. Maybe another time for Gun Powder.

    July 3, 2013

  • Bruce F.

I am looking for Conodoguinet Creek. I don't see it as a choice. The Gunpowder was a choice I chose.

    July 3, 2013

  • Bruce F.

OK, I give up. Since many people don't want to do it then we can switch it back to the Conodoguinet Creek. Sorry, but I really wanted people to do this one on the Gunpowder.

    July 3, 2013

  • Barbara K.

Since this event was originally the Conodoguinet, how about if we split and do two separate events? I am new to kayaking and have been looking forward to checking it out. I transport my kayak in my older pickup truck and do not really want to go as far as Maryland, at least not at this time. What do you say, Bruce? Will you make your Gun powder trip a different event?

    July 3, 2013

  • Bruce F.

It is nice for a change and I truly believe that everyone would enjoy it!

    July 3, 2013

  • Bruce F.

I have done the Conodoguinet many times when I lived in Harrisburg. I recently did the Gun Powder not far from Pretty Boy Reservoir and I must say it was a treat. There are trout fisherman in the water. It was a beautiful ride and quite interesting. I took it down to Monkton Road and really enjoyed it alot!

I agree with Barbara, why the change to Maryland?

    July 3, 2013

I am hoping to do the Conodoguinet that day, as was originally proposed.

I have done Gunpowder from Masemore Road down to Monkton Road. It is fantastic and takes about 3 hours or so. Well worth it to me!
