Mountaineering in Lakes

The Ennerdale Valley is one of the most remote and peaceful areas in the Lakes.

The hostel is small but has all you could want, check it out for yourself.
http://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/ennerdale

We have the famous Pillar Rock and many other smaller crags to climb in the area.

If you want to come on this weekend please book your own accommodation with the hostel. Unfortunately we have to insist on this arrangement after previous bad experiences when we’ve made block bookings only to be let down by people dropping out. Gerry, Kevin and Mike have booked in for both the Friday and Saturday nights but if you can only make one or other night that’s fine.

We'll also be looking to arrange car sharing for this one to cut down on petrol costs. This outing is not recommended for absolute beginners but if you’ve done some outdoor climbing and have got a head for heights you’ll be OK. The plan is to make these mountain weekends a regular monthly venture and we are very much open to suggestions on venues so if there’s anywhere you fancy going, let us know. For any late queries, Kevin's no. is[masked]

I'm in if I can get a lift...

    March 23, 2013

    • Carol

Hi Jay - are you still coming on Saturday? E-mailed you from your profile, but I really can't get to grips with how various functions on Meet Up sights work, so i've probably gone wrong somewhere. Anyway - was saying that if you can get to Mytholmroyd train station on Saturday morning on the train that arrived 7.05am we can set off, aiming to arrive between[masked]am. Let me know if you still need the lift/that suits you.

    • Jay

Sorry, Carol. Something else came up and I've only just got back home. Thanks anyway and maybe next time!

      April 28, 2013

  • Kevin

Yes, James, it was hard work; quite an epic with 3 1/2 hrs + 'walk-in' to the crag !. Anyway, we managed a climb and got 1 or 2 'tops' in along the way. Thanks everyone for the weekend.
And really sorry Carol, that you never made it ; so close as well. We did wait around 'til 10.45am and in the end, it was 8'ish before we got back to the hostel, so maybe worth organising it a bit different next time

    April 22, 2013

    • Carol

Och dinnae worry. It was fine. I had a lovely walk around Ennerdale Water. Much more civilised than your adventure from what I gather! Glad you all had fun. How many of you were there in the end? c

      April 22, 2013

    • Carol

Wow - just looked at the photos - amazingly beautiful. Hard work eh? But worth it! c

      April 22, 2013

  • James G.

We were both blown away (literally) with this adventure. Hard work but well worth the walk to get to out first multi pitch. Shame the rain spoilt the scramble on Sunday but sure we'll get another chance soon.

Hi, I've tried to text Kevin and Mike but I think the reception is poor. I'm in Ambleside and can meet tomorrow but I hear the weather is due to change. Let me know what is happening please!

    April 20, 2013

  • Nichola A.

Slight change of plans... I'm working early doors but driving up sat aft... Can I have a mobile number to call please

    April 19, 2013

  • Kevin

Carol..I found that pair of shoes I mentioned , but theyre a 42 (8 ?) on the label..They certainly dont look that big, but I'll bring them anyway..
Also, Nichola...we'll probably be away from the hostel soon after 10'ish. Carol is aiming to get there for 10, so it won't be before then.

Weather's looking good...at least for the Saturday !

    April 18, 2013

    • Carol

Hi Kevin - yes please - do bring the shoes anyway.

      April 18, 2013

  • Carol

Hello everyone. Can I request a borrow of a spare harness please? Obviously with the extra payment for equipment. Also, I've had a bit of disaster trying to get hold of a pair of decently priced climbing choes (size 6) - long story but i've had very limited time to physically go search em out in shops, so did an online order and spoke to guy in shop who assured me the ones I was going to order would not be tight ... they arrived this morning and they are flippin tiny and crush my feet - can barely take a step in em. Soooooo, if anyone has a spare/old n holey but useable pair of size 6 climbing shoes (or owt around that size 'coz it ain't an exact science eh?) please, please, please could you bring em along. Happy to pay a fee to use em as well - that 3.00 surcharge thingy wotsit. Thank you!

Hi Carol, I can bring both with me thanks Mike

      April 17, 2013

  • Padraig O.

Hi Kevin. I'm self-sufficient for gear and transport. Since I don't yet know which day(s) I'll be there I can't really book accommodation. No problem if YH is full - I may either arrive very early morning or else late at night and sleep in car.

    April 15, 2013

  • Nichola A.

Ah...slight problem, yh is full so I'm staying with my pal in Ambleside. Is the venue easy to find ? What sort of time will you all be meeting . Sorry but I'm a rookie, haven't managed an outdoor climb yet ?

    April 15, 2013

  • Kevin

Hiya Padraig..Sounds like you're pretty much 'self-sufficient' with regards to climbing stuff, but are you OK for transport and accommodation (as I'm not sure if the YHA is full now ?)

    April 15, 2013

  • Padraig O.

    Hi

Should be able to attend one day (not sure which one yet, I'm afraid) and hopefully the night before.

Weather permitting, really keen to pair up with a rock-climbing novice as I'm doing my MIA and this would help my logbook.

    Any takers?

    April 14, 2013

  • Nichola A.

I am working on the Saturday until 1:00 so I will book the hostel for Sat night and climb Sunday if that's ok ?

    April 14, 2013

    • Kevin

Hiya Nichola...Yes, that's fine...We don't know yet just what we'll be doing on each day and of course, it depends on weather, but I'm sure somebody will actually be climbing if you want to get a good route in

      April 14, 2013

  • Carol

A question for the organisers ... Jay and I will be arriving on Saturday morning - are you aiming to start at 11am like you normally do on the weekend climbs? Basically, what time should we be aiming to arrive for? (No worries if this question is too early to ask - just let us know, er, when you know...)
    cheers,
    :)

What is everyone doing regards meals? Take your own? Pay for YHA to prepare? We have ordered breakfast for both mornings but other than that will probably take enough 'ready meals' for the evenings
and make up some soup and butties for lunch out on the hills.

    April 4, 2013

    • Jay

I've booked the breakfast and your ready meals and butties solution sounds like a plan. Plenty of rabbits up there if we want to go all Ray Mears.

      April 4, 2013

    • Carol

Hello - I'll be getting the YHA breakfast on Sunday morning. Will bring butties and soup (great idea) for lunch on Saturday. Was gonna book the YHA meal in the evening too - but ready meals sound like a good idea so will probably do that instead.

Sorry I'm not going to be able to make this now. Just found out my Grandma died. With the circumstances it will be while before everything is sorted so I think that weekend will be when a few of us get together; I probably shouldn't commit to anything. Hope its a fab trip though, I'll see you at Hudds and Rokt and hopefully make the next weekend.

    April 4, 2013

    • James G.

Sorry to here that. See you next time you fancy a climb.

      April 4, 2013

  • James G.

We are planning to travel up fairly early Friday morning around 9.30ish and return sometime Sunday evening to make the most of the weekend. Had a word with YHA and they are happy for us to use facilities during the day of arrival for cooking etc. but check in is after 5pm. We have room for 2 more inc. gear if anyone's stuck for transport and want to share fuel costs. Will be leaving from Huddersfield and could meet or pick up en route.

    April 4, 2013

    • Jay

I'm out buying a climbing helmet at the mo so just a quick message to say Id be up for a lift back on the Sunday if you still have a spare seat.

      April 4, 2013

    • Jay

Back home with a shiny new buddhist helmet. Just need some orange robes to match.

James, I'm getting a lift up on Sat am with Carol but she has to leave early on Sunday and I'd (hopefully) be up for another day's climbing, hence the hope of just a lift back. If somebody is willing to travel both ways with you then obviously that's better for all concerned.

Oh and Lizzie: no, you don't need membership and you only end up paying £3 per night extra as anon-member. Just get booking !

    March 30, 2013

  • Kevin

yeah, thanks gerry. Nearer the time - and with a bit better idea of weather and temps. - we can keep the discussion going here for those who aren't that familiar with what to bring and what to wear/need in the mountains

Just a cautionary note about this one. While we've opened this outing up to members of all levels of experience and ability, it is important that everybody comes equipped with the basic level of footwear and clothing. We can provide a couple of spare harnesses but everybody will need to bring with them a good pair of walking boots as well as warm clothing, waterproofs, extra layers etc.

    March 29, 2013

  • Lizzie C.

I'm in...do you need to be a YHA member to stay here?

    March 29, 2013

  • Carol

Hello - have booked my accommodation for Saturday night now (what a palaver that was - why do they always force you to register when you just wanna give your card details and pay!!!) So, I'll be travelling up Saturday morning (I guess like everyone else?) and would appreciate being able to follow someone. I will be coming back on Sunday morning as I work on Sun afternoon. Happy to give lifts to anyone that wants to travel on either of these journey legs. I'll be travelling from Mytholmroyd/Hebden Bridge area. Alternatively, if anyone else is travelling at these times I could get a lift with them to share petrol costs etc - but I expect most people will be staying till later on the Sunday?

    March 29, 2013

  • Nichola A.

I would like to attend but I need to check if I am working till 2. If I am I can drive up and climb on the Sunday if you will still be up there .

Hi Jess, Yes you'd be welcome to join us in The Lakes. I'm sure we can also arrange a lift for you. We'll sort something out nearer the time.

    March 25, 2013

    • Kevin

Jess...I'll see you at another indoor meet probably before the Lakes outing, but just to let you know Gerry doesnt do 'indoors' so he won't be at ROKT

Hi Kevin and Gerry, I have booked Friday and Saturday night. As I mentioned last time I would appreciate travelling up with another driver. I can drive further up north to catch a lift. I will gladly return the favour on a trip to Wales sometime.

Hi, I'd love to come on this weekend but am new to the group. I'm a keen climber but having just returned from 6 months working in Cambodia I'm a little rusty! Is it OK for newbies to join? Also, unfortunately I'm car-less, I could get myself to anywhere reasonable on public transport but is it potentially possible to car share and contribute to petrol?

Hi Izabela...I'm afarid I don't know the area..(Mike might advise, as he put the venue up); otherwise just 'google' for campsites in Ennerdale

Hi Liz, Yes the accomodation situation in Snowdonia for that weekend is not good but not to worry, we're going to go the The Lakes instead. Mike is sorting out the accomodation this weekend. We'll be staying at the youth hostel in Ennerdale which is very handy for the famous Pillar Rock. We'll officially change the venue as soon as the accomodation is booked which should be sometime this weekend. We'll also put the Snowdonia trip up for May.

Neil's right. Looks like Idwal cottage is already booked up for that weekend, must be the school holidays or something. I'll discuss it with Kevin and Mike ASAP and we'll either change the date or find alternative accomodation. I'll put the details here as soon as we sort something out.
