Climbing at Rylstone

It's time for a return to the magnificent Rylstone, it's been too long. This is one of the very finest crags East of the Pennines, with several excellent routes on the famous Dental Slab alone. The whole crag offers wonderful delicate climbing in a spectacular airy setting. This meet is for everyone, not just experienced climbers. Your own shoes would be necessary, but we do have a few spare harnesses between us, though do ask before, so we bring them along. There will be a £1 for subs for people with their own equipment and £3 besides.. thanks. As usual, my no. (Kevin's) for any last-minute queries:[masked]

Just spoken to Kevin and we've changed the meeting place. We will now be meeting in Rylstone village in the large layby. Drive through to the far (North) side of the village and the layby is on the left side of the road. You can't miss it.

I'm just getting a bit concerned about the parking situation. There's only room for a maximum of four cars in that layby, are we all going to get in? Might be better if we all meet in the village then car share to the layby.

    Evening all.
Just found out that I can use the car tomorrow so no longer require a lift. Many thanks for the offers Liz and Kevin. Jess, I'm now in a position to offer you a lift from Huddersfield if it's not too short notice. Text me if that's any help. [masked]

Jess...I saw James last night; he's still heading up so we'll see you both at Skipton station.
Carol..do you need a harness. If its mine you're relying on, it'll have to be that little '70's chic no., that you're so fond of !

Hi Kevin - sorry for late reply. ridiculously busy week. Yes, would be grateful for a harness - any harness. 70s chic is a plus! (just so you don't think i'm being slack about harness requesting... see my note on 27 June when i rsvpd :) I haven't had time to check out google maps on how to get there yet, but once I do is it okay to give you a call to double check directions and see if there's any point where I might be able to converge with and follow you there, etc. It might be a straight forward route - i'll work it out tonight when I get back. Cheers.

Hello i'd like to come. Can anyone offer me a lift up to the crag from the nearest train station to it?

    July 5, 2013

  • Julian G.

Double-checked my availability with the family last night and yes I'm definitely coming. See you in the layby at 11.

Hi Jess...yes, I'm sure we can arrange to pick you up in Skipton. Just let me know what time your train arrives (then its about 15 mins drive up to Rylstone from the station)

    • Kevin

Jess.. I've left a note for James above..it seems there's a train arriving at 10.24am, so would you be on the same one ?

Hi Kevin, yes I can be on the same train, that should make things easier. Thanks very much!

      July 4, 2013

  • Kevin

Hi James..Yes, plan on getting the train anyway; ideally the one that arrives at 10.24am. (Jess,.is that the same one that you will arrive on ?)...I'm not so sure about getting you back though for 5'ish, especially if it is up at Rylstone and not a nearer crag as we'd have to allow at least an hour to get down the hill and back into Skipton, so that would mean leaving before 4pm..Have a think about it and I'll see you tonight anyway

    Hi.
I also would be very grateful if some kind sole could offer a ride from Skipton station and back to the station again at the end of the day. I would however need to be back at the station by 5.15pm at the latest as my good lady has planned an evening out with the girls at 7pm. If this fits in with anybody that would be great. If not, I could always get a bus back to Skipton. The morning train arrives at Skipton either 10.24am or 10.58am, probably get earlier one as not used to public transport. Ta very much.

Hi Liz, The layby where we normally park for Rylstone is not easy to spot if you don't know it. It's essentially just a recess on the grass verge with enough room for 3 or 4 cars at the most. You need to drive into Rylstone village then turn round at the duck pond and head back up the hill towards Skipton, the layby is on your left just after the trees end, around 300 or 400 metres out of the village. The walk in is a bit longer than average for a gritstone crag, about 45 minutes and all uphill too! I'll consult with Kevin tomorrow in the light of the rain we've had this week and make a decision on whether to go ahead with Rylstone or switch it to a nearby crag, as Rylstone tends to get very lichenous after rain.

Hi Kevin, thanks for your quick response as always. I was attempting to find the crag on UK Climbing and using a map. I will see you at one of the laybys on Saturday and presumably its just a walk from there. E

Hi Elizabeth..Did you mean Rylstone or something to do with the Lakes meet ? (I've never heard of Sun Moor Hill)..If you meant Rylstone for this Sat., and if you're driving up the B6265 from Skipton to Grassington, there's a small layby on the right-hand side on the Skipton side of Rylstone village...If you can't get in there, there's abigger layby on the far side of the village. If you want to meet us somewhere in the Skipton area, we could go up in convoy

In theory, might anyone be passing Skipton train station?

We'll just have to keep an eye on the weather over the next few days, as Rylstone tends to get very lichenous after rain. If the coming week is a wet one, we'll change the venue to Crookrise or Dear Gallows.
