A weekend in the Lakes

To keep the 'away' meets going, we're off to Borrowdale this time. Some are staying at the Borrowdale YHA:

http://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/borrowdale
and you can camp near the hostel too.

There is plenty of climbing in and around the Borrowdale area

I should get to Borrowdale at about 9pm. I'll text Kevin when I get there to find out if you are in the pub.

Katerina. Leo and I should be passing through Penrith between 6 & 7 pm on Friday depending on traffic conditions. We would be happy to meet you at the station. We are camping quite close to the hostel so could drop you there. Have you booked a bed at the hostel or were you thinking of camping? If this plan works for you then give me a text when you arrive at the station 07879615551...... The dream team rule.!!!

      Nice one, see you then.

Katerina, we'll be in Borrowdale well before then and its a 50.mile round trip to Penrith.
There are buses from Penrith to Keswick :
    http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/roads-transport/public-transport-road-safety/transport/publictransport/busserv/timetables/default.asp
(Click on 'Eden' and its the X5 service. It looks to take only 45 mins.).......Also, check with James; he and Leo are coming up at teatime, so would be more 'in the area' around that time.

Anna, just let us know which day you'll be coming (both look good -weatherwise - so far) and we'll save something for you !...(I've put a little album of pics up of a route I really fancy. Its a classic 'severe'; not only of the Lakes but the country)..Must do !, if we get the chance.

Is everyone sorted for accommodation and transport ? ...Niki and Dave: can you still make it ?. The forecast is looking good, though cold compared and there's every likelihood that a few of us will get up there for a climb on the Friday afternoon.
Uh oh, I've just noticed Katerina has signed up (that means we'll we'll have to reorganise the 'dream team '). (When are you arriving K. and are you sorted for accomm. ?

    October 7, 2013

    • Kevin

Katerina. We haven't made firm travel arrangements yet (like, who is travelling with who). Whichever way we do it we'll be somewhere near Keswick by about Friday lunchtime. I'll know better after Wed. evening, so I'll keep you posted

Hello Kevin! I can book my train tickets to Penrith which is the nearest train station to Keswick, as I saw. I can be there no earlier than 6 or 7 in the afternoon on Friday. Do you think that it would be possible for someone to come and pick me up? In other case I ll try hitchhiking!! (Give my wishes to the dream team!!)

Can I just check that everybody has got their own nut key as well as one or two extra screwgate carabiners and slings and a prussic loop because you will need these if you want to climb multi pitch routes.

I’m looking to do some big mountain stuff but nothing too desperate. I’m keen on an easy multi pitch climb like Corvus on Raven Crag. I’m happy to do all the leading as long as I’m paired up with a competent belayer. Other than that I could really fancy repeating one of the classic scrambles in the area such as Intake Ridge or Cam Crag Ridge, possibly even doing both of them in one day if there’s enough daylight. Apart from that there's also the various classic ridges on Great Gable if anyone's prepared for a big walk in!

    September 21, 2013

  • James G.

More than happy with multi or single.

    September 20, 2013

  • James G.

Something toward the vdiff end for myself and leo, if that fits in ok. We could probably manage hvd or even severe but it may take us some time to get up.

    September 20, 2013

  • Kevin

With Gerry's note in mind and to minimise disappointment, why don't we put up what we'd like from the weekend; be it easy or harder climbing (single or multi-pitch), scrambling or a good hill walk, then we might have an easier task with 'who's with who' on the day. Again all weather-dependant of course. I quite fancy a `classic' big route and Paul reminded me about 'Troutdale Pinnacle'(a Severe, 105m) on Black Crag or a variation on it. 'Eve' on Shepherds looks a belter, but its 4c and we didnt ought to go without getting 'Little Chamonix - a Vdiff - done

hi I could book more bed if needed, but would need solid commitment
you can camp at the hostel too

I looking at climb at shepherd's crag, raven crag, gillercombe buttress and or black crag just some ideas all got some nice routres

Count me in for Raven Crag, Mike, I've always wanted to do Corvus. Gillercombe is good too but needs a few dry days to come into condition so let's hope we get the weather. Shepherds might be alright for a Friday afternoon session but I was under the impression that Black Crag is all very hard stuff, mostly in the E grades.

Mike has managed to secure a 4-bed room at Borrowdale YHA, but I didnt have any luck with anything else. The only vacancy I could find was at the Maggs Howe barn in Kentmere where we stayed back end of 2011, but they wanted £120/night for 12 people. Comment here if you want 1 of the 2 places besides me and Mike and it might mean a change of plans for others...Don't forget, Elizabeth is organising similar in early November.
James...yes, certainly a good idea. it might take some co-ordinating if it was part of an 'ordinary' meet as it would need to be near somewhere where everyone could get a climb or scramble and the more remote crags tend to be harder and certainly multi-pitch. I'll do a bit of work on it; not for this meet though... Otherwise, pick a crag and then base your plans around that..You know can do it James ...go for it !

James, Levers Water would be a perfect spot. A spectacularly picturesque setting, plenty flat ground and only an hour walk in. Best of all you're surrounded by climbing and scrambling opportunities with the likes of Little How, Great How, Raven Tor and Sunlight Crag.

      September 19, 2013

    • James G.

This sounds like just the ticket! Just got to sell the idea to the others now. Thanks again.

      September 19, 2013

  • Kevin

Thanks Paul for the note on the camping. I've just rung the YHA and they still have available a 2-bed room (if you and T. wanted it)..There's also a 6-bed room going and beds in a male dorm. If you want to enquire directly to the hostel its :[masked]

There is a campsite just over the road from Borrowdale YHA

camped here last year and it was pretty good, its even got a barn where you can cook and socialise under cover. I'd be happy to camp or may even drag the old caravan up there so the whole family could come.

Kevin, I'll have one of the places in the room at the YHA.

    September 18, 2013

  • Nichola A.

James this is a brilliant idea. I am game for both but being so cold we could do with borrowing a small pit pony for the luggage! !! I would really like to wild camp as only done it once before mid summer solstice at the top of Dungeon Ghyll. If either happens an idiots guide on what to bring (minimum) may be required.

    September 18, 2013

  • James G.

What are peoples thoughts on actually wild camping at or near a climbing venue? May be a bit difficult getting climbing and camping gear up there but imagine being able to climb from dawn till dusk.
Alternatively, if anyone fancies just a wild camp sometime, let me know and I'll have a crack at organising something.

    September 17, 2013

  • Kevin

The latest on the accomm. Mike has only found room at the Borrowdale YHA and that would probably have to be dorm. accommodation. I'm trying round some links that Paul mailed..There's a camping barn near Ulpha, but thats booked that weekend (though it is available for the 'new' meet going up for Nov. 1st. and 2nd. : have a look), so I'll keep trying for the others

    1 · September 16, 2013

Mike is going to work on securing YHA accommodation. I checked on YHS Eskdale but they're full that weekend, so it could be anywhere in the area. Failing that I'll still try for a bunkbarn.

As per usual, please can i say YES but reserve the right to make my excuses nearer the time. I take the kids to Florida 19th October but if that suits most people Im sure there will be another chance.

Thats the 'little Florida trip' at this time of the year eh, Niki !

      September 9, 2013

We'll keep the suggested dates of 11th/12th as a few can make it on that partic. weekend..I'll look at some YHA accommodation to start with (or Mike: if you've some suggestions..Is there anything over on the Duddon Valley side, then we could get to Wallowbarrow and stuff over there)
