We are a group based in West Yorkshire, for people who want to climb or have days out in the hills and mountains. The group has being going for 4 yrs. now (as at Mar.'15). We have found that there are lots of people who want to climb but don’t know where to start or have ‘had a go’ and aren’t sure what to do next. Or, you might have some experience and have been ‘out of action’ for a while or have no-one to climb with, or you might simply want to have fun days out on the crags.
We meet weekly to climb outdoors during the summer months and as often as the weather allows during the winter. We also meet weekly indoors at climbing walls (excellent of course, for complete beginners) and because of the level of interest, they continue throughout the year. During the summer months we have several residential meets in the Lakes and Snowdonia, staying in YHAs, bunkbarns or camping, and now have a 'Winter Escape' trip to Spain. Generally we are a very busy group and various members are giving some thought to walks, social events and more European destinations.
We need to make it clear that we are not instructors or professionally qualified to teach climbing and we are not responsible for teaching new climbers to belay etc. We can offer new members who cannot climb at all, two sessions as a 'taster'. Following the two sessions you will be encouraged to have booked onto a course at the Wall or a similar establishment, or have undertaken one before climbing as part of the Yorkshire Climbers again. Similarly, climbers who are already competent in top roping and wish to lead will be encouraged to undertake a lead climbing course and again, this cannot be taught by us.
Having attended the Yorkshire Climbers meets for one month every new member will be expected to pay a £10 fee for six months membership. This guarantees the group some money for the six monthly fees to the 'Meetup' organisation and to contribute towards members' equipment when used at the Wall and at outdoor meets and towards the renewal of this equipment, guidebooks etc..
Additionally, before joining this site you should read the BMC participation statement which states:
"The BMC recognises that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement."
If you do not accept full responsibility for for your own actions and involvement in any outdoor activities please do not join this group, Yorkshire Climbers cannot accept responsibility for the actions of its members and advises everyone to get adequate insurance for the activities they want to take part in, Insurance details can be found on the BMC site.
So, if you think this is for you, come along and experience the fun of being ‘out there’ !
