Johnston Canyon Ice Walk

The Johnston Canyon Ice walk follows a series of steel catwalks that give spectacular views of the Johnston Canyon below. This popular ice walk will lead you past snow and ice that have formed brilliant icicles, the lower falls and to the breathtaking upper icefalls.

Dress for the winter conditions with warm layered clothing, toque, gloves, winter hiking boots, microspikes/ice poles are a must. Bring a packed lunch/snacks and enough water/fluids.

We will car pool on the day from Sirocco Park and Ride (17th ave SW). Johnston Canyon is located on the 1A and it’s about a 30 minute drive from Banff. You can also drive Highway 1 and take Castle Mountain junction to the right. Cross the train tracks and turn right on to the 1A. In about 5 minutes you will see the sign on your left.

Blue ice occurs when snow falls on a glacier, is compressed, and becomes part of a glacier that winds its way toward a body of water (river, lake, ocean, etc.). During its travels, air bubbles that are trapped in the ice are squeezed out, and the size of the ice crystals increases, making it clear. A good example of blue ice was observed in Tasman Glacier, New Zealand in January 2011.[1] In some areas, earthquakes have raised the blue ice above the ground and created formations much like large frozen waves. The blue color is often wrongly attributed to Rayleigh scattering. Rather, ice is blue for the same reason water is blue: it is a result of an overtone of an oxygen-hydrogen (O-H) bond stretch in water which absorbs light at the red end of the visible spectrum

Thanks Wayne for this info (as I know some of us were wondering why the ice is blue!) and for organizing this event. You all made my first winter hike a memorable experience with great company and amazing scenery. Looking forward to seeing everyone again at future events! :)

We have a car and can take 2 or 3 passengers. We live in the NW, Dalhousie. Is it possible to meet with you somewhere closer to the canyon at a parking lot?

Hi Wayne, I dont have a car I'm afraid but I have a park pass if that helps. Sorry I can't do more.

    February 10, 2013

  • Wayne S.

Still no one to state they are "in" to drive? I think I will give it until tomorrow night and if this situation to help out with this meetup does not improve we will be forced to pull it from the calendar. The 3 in my truck we will still hit it on the day though ;)

I live in westbrook, who can give me a ride? or I can take LRT to there?

    February 10, 2013

  • Wayne S.

Hi all. Some participants have shown some concern about not having wheels and getting to the Canyon. Can we get an idea on how many people are open to driving out? As stated we will meet at the park and ride and we can organize from there who rides with who.

    Thanks!

Hey Wayne ! The pics are awesome.
What's the difficulty level, distance, Elev gain or profile?

    February 7, 2013

    • Wayne S.

Not a difficult hike due to the catwalks. Pace will be moderate/easy. This isnt a back country meetup, should be fun.
