First Friday Swing Dancing

Let's go swing dancing!

Dancing again anyone? Or, for the first time?

One or two hundred people get together twice a week to dance it up. It's a great environment, friendly to new dancers, or "non-dancers". They've got classes before hand if you want to learn something or break some ice. Let's go. Because ... Friday.

Here's what it looks like:

And here's a quintessential clip:

If you want to take a class, there is a cost. It's $15 for a class [and it includes the dance, afterward]. Their calendar has more classes and details. The beginning class starts at 7:45.

After the classes, lots more people show up to dance to the DJ-ed music. If you're sorta shy, well lots of people are, but you can stick with the Nerds until you warm up to the place!

The price is included with a class. It's $10 for just the dance ($8 for students w/ ID). Music starts up at 8:30 and goes until, maybe 2am. People from the classes often hang around, and other people show up. Everybody's really pretty friendly.

To get there, check out this map:

The place is close to John Wayne Airport, just off of Redhill. The parking lot can be a maze. There are at least twelve ways to get directly there. Let the map be your cheat sheet to find the easy one.

Trust me, look at the map. It'll save you time.

All the lessons are in Lindy Hop, right? Not swing?

The lessons are fairly rudimentary. While they might teach 8-count patterns (sometimes), it's not a very good introduction to the lindy basic. At least, not that I've seen.

  • Noel (Manuel) T should we dress for this? Comfortably? Dressy like we're going out on the town? Ready to sweat like hot yoga? =^D

"Dressy casual" would probably be a good average. I've seen everything from jeans and a t-shirt, to 3-piece suit. Because there's so much variety, everybody feels pretty free to wear want they want. I've seen shorts, but rarely. Overall, people dress it up a bit.

I do nice jeans and a button-up. If you're going to do a T-shirt, consider bringing an extra or two. Sweat.

Keep in mind, you'll be moving around. Here are some useful pointers:
      • Comfortable shoes.
      • Clothes that breathe.
      • Hair and jewelry shouldn't be too "dangly", to whip around.

I always try n dress the era :)
Flowy dresses. Guys keep it to either jeans or slacks or like Devlin says 3 piece suits.

The monthly event! It happens that they're doing a weekend-long workshop that weekend, so there will be some out-of-town dancers, and everybody's gonna be all hyped up. Should be pretty awesome :)
