Watch the movie "Drive," race go karts, and slam on the brakes for dinner.

  • This location is shown only to members

This meetup is happening in three parts.  Please indicate in your comments by your RSVP which portion you'll be attending.

1.  Movie starts at 2:50pm.  Meet 2:15pm at Edwards Metro Pointe in Costa Mesa to watch the movie Drive, starring Ryan Gosling...so far 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.  I'll be standing in front of the ticketing booth, at the top of the escalator.

2.  Thusly inspired, and fully adrenalized, migrate to K1 Speed a few minutes away to race each other on go karts for bragging rights.  Cost to race will be $5.95 for a license and $20 per 14-lap race. Here's the address.  Meet time there for those only wanting to race, 5pm.

17221 Von Karman Avenue
Irvine, CA 92614

3.  Dinner at a location yet to be determined.  Currently taking suggestions...  This is kind of a pricey, almost epic afternoon, so it'll probably be value-oriented.  I'm thinking In & Out.  We may also go for drinks after...Santa Ana or Newport Beach.  We can discuss this at dinner.

That said, the attendance policy will apply to the K1 portion of this meetup only.  A last minute cancellation (within 24 hours) w/o a good reason will be frowned upon.  A no show will count towards the three strike rule (as in three strikes & you're *ka-pow* history).  If you come drinking with us and go nuts or get killed or otherwise behave in a not-so-cool fashion, you're on your own...i.e. (seriously here) you take full responsibility and absolve any of the members of this meetup of liability.  I may also tease you publicly and give you a new appropriate nickname which will appear by your meetup picture for all to see.

It's a track day: five twenty-minute sessions. That's over an hour and a half of seat time! Well worth the time and money spent. As a spectator: much less exciting, but spectators do get to ride along with instructors, and I hear it's very educational.

Dude. That's like a 2hr drive. What types of events will be going on that day?

Their November schedule is not posted yet, for some reason. I'll keep an eye on it. November will be interesting, because I plan on also going back up to Streets of Willow.

Hey Seth. The 28th is looking to be a crazy day for me. Can you look at available dates in Nov?

    Yep, no prob.
I will also have my GoPro HD camera handy, and can mount it to people's cars using the suction mount. Everyone who goes will get some footage of them in action. Clean your windows...

Make it a meetup, I should be free. 6p-10p. $35 for drivers. $10 for passengers. $3 for entry. Spectating from stands is free. Helmet rental is $5.
Specify in the meetup that I can give ride alongs in my MR2. If someone wants one, they will need to say so in advance, so I can install a passenger seat and restraining system. Otherwise, I will be showing up minus driver's seat. Carpooling would be awesome as well.
Cars should have no leaking fluids. Brake pads should not be worn past wear bars.

That date works for me. It's not a ridiculous distance from an account of mine either, so I can get some work done there and come right over. It's gonna suck for you though, if you're working in OC, since you'll be fighting traffic to get there...on a Friday afternoon, too. I'm game. We can make it a meetup even.

Look at the schedule at the following URL. Every couple of Fridays you will see Grip/Drift Practice. Those are the days we can go. It runs from 6 to 10. I'd have to take some time off work, but based on past experience you want to get there right at 6 to make the most of it. They switch off between grip drivers, and people who just want to drift. Fun to watch and make fun of. The next practice is on the 28th.

Cool. If there's a schedule, maybe we can plan ahead and coordinate something.

Sure, John. I'm trying to get into it as much as I can myself, but it's an expensive hobby :p Anyway, I'm not much of a spectator, but I would be willing to give ride alongs and any sort of instruction falling between beginner and intermediate. I feel Adams Motorsports Park is the best bang-for-your-buck option available because it breaks down the costs into a bite sized chunk ($35 for a day), it's relatively close (Riverside), and it is not demanding of cars or drivers (low speeds, EZ rules).

Seth, let's talk more about future opportunities to either watch or participate in auto racing. You seem to know quite a bit about this stuff. Can't speak for the others, but I'm definitely interested.

Nice. I spent a good part of last night and this morning wondering what the perfect line would be. I wish we could do a timed trial, or time each lap after experimenting with different cornering techniques. It's funny...my individual lap times were pretty inconsistent, I guess cuz I was messing w/ different cornering tricks, and got stuck behind some people I couldn't pass for a good while. My fastest lap was about 1.2 seconds slower than the fastest overall lap that week, so I'm happy w/ it.

Here are some videos of the go-kart experience. For me, this was my first time on a go-kart. They are both on-board videos from track layout # 1 & #2. I took some videos of other people driving by, but my camera is terrible in low light, and they were dark, grainy, and otherwise just horrible. You can't tell who is who.

Yes! In one of those syringes from the movie The Rock...where you have to stab it straight into your heart... Or not. Okay, I got a little excited there...

I will bring epinephrine for anyone who doesn't get the anticipated rush from the movie.
