Artsy Fartsy

So I actually talked to a few people about this. I'm not sure what day I would do it but definately some time in November. I love arts and crafts; painting, colored pencils, chalk all different kinds of media. I, however, am really bad at starting a piece of art. I mull it around in my head, sketch, resketch and resketch again and again until I talk myself out of actually doing it :P Type A personality and art sometimes conflict. BUT! If I had a group of other peeps I might be more inclined just to "wing it".

If you like to create any type of art perhaps we should consider getting together...sort of like a art support group! You can bring what ever type of media you like (I am a little more inclined to say no to clay and oil paint unless we meet in my garage, which is now cold or you bring a tarp) and spend 1-3 hours working on a piece of art. We could all even pick a theme and create our interpretation of it???

We could meet perhaps once a month and try to make progress on the pieces and finish within a given time frame. Maybe even put all the pieces in a Starbucks or my building (Multnomah Arts Center) has a gallery too...

What should the first theme be? "rain", "we miss the sun", "Portland in fall", "why oh why didn't I wear a third layer today?"

Looks like a long wait list already... But let me know if you do this again! It sounds like tons of fun. I collage and am the queen of winging it. ;)

For sure it will happen again. I was thinking of doing it like once a month. Better if we can find a bigger place to do it so I don't have to lug tables and chairs from work! And more ppl can fit. But I think I may have gotten us a spot at a art warehouse type place. If we have ppl that are interested in doing this once a month we could rent space for a couple months...

Hey Kim, so I always tell people to add themselves to the waitlist because about an hour before people start dropping like flies! It's also why I figure we don't need a huge room because people usually cancel last minute. Which means if you're on the waitlist you will most likely make it it in. That also means that if you are planning on not going you should take yourself off the waitlist!

Don't know if there is interest in this or if it's realistic, but since there are many more people who are interested in getting together for this event than there are "spaces" and/or room at Payal's house, I'm wondering if folks would be interested in trying to have this event somewhere else in a bigger space where more people can join (Payal-- specifically to you since this is your event, would that make sense?)? Maybe a community center, or large coffee shop or whatnot? Perhaps if anyone has any suggestions for spaces like this we could figure something out? Or we could plan a separate event because it seems like there is so much interest? I am definitely interested in getting to know some folks while getting creative!

also, RE: making a mess, I'd hope that folks wouldn't make too much of a mess wherever we go and if they do they would clean it up-- assuming the even happens at your house it would also be a bummer if folks left their art mess. In the past when I've gone to art meet ups in cafes people just need to be mindful about what mediums they choose to work with, how they use their supplies, and to clean up afterwards. All in all, might be worth giving the library a try one weekend.

Yeah Im planning on getting a lot of plastic bags which is what I did for the pumpkin carving stuff too. I just hope it's warm enough in the garage :/ IF anyone wants to bring their space heater that might be a good addition to mine lol...

Sadly, I really was looking forward to this, I have to un-rsvp.. Stuff going on last minute and we are running around like headless chickens. If there is a repeat of this meet up I will sign up for the next one.

Address has been sent so please unRSVP if you can't make it. Please don't wait until 5 minutes before 7 to tell me you can't make it. We all know that you know you are going to be stuck at work like an hour before you are supposed to leave and that you won't make it. If you flake, own it....that is all. :D

      *dies laughing*

I saw Thursday and immediately thought tomorrow... Glad I caught that now instead of after arriving at your house with a plate of cookies. Though surprise cookies always rule >.>

Are we still looking for a time/place for this event? Because I would be happy to host it next Wednesday at my apartment.

I was thinking of doing it Nov 30th. hopefully that works. Or do we want to do it on a day that's maybe during the week and less weekend time?

Any update on when / where? All of my weekends are filled with trips for family. Not sure if weekdays are an option. I'm still excited, I want to get my art on!

Ok well that filled up fast! The only location I could think of was my house (which is free)...perhaps even set up a few tables and chair in the garage and turn on the heater unless someone knows of a better place? We could rent a work space too. The Multnomah Arts Center has rooms we can rent for pretty cheap...I'll look into it.

I love this idea! It would be super fun to create some kind of rain or Portland themed project as a group. I used to paint but life gets in the way all too quickly. I'm in!

I love this idea!! I have an art area in my apartment, but when life gets busy...well let's just say I'm not the most disciplined. I am totally going to this! I love the Portland in Fall theme.

This sounds like a great idea! I'm totally in. I used to do a lot of art, and while I still want to, I always end up putting it off in favor of less fun things, like cleaning. Having a dedicated time where I have to meet and work on something would be great!

    October 12, 2012

    • Payal

Yeah I figured the element of accountability is useful when just the sheer enjoyment of doing art it isn't enough to not make me feel bad for not studying, cleaning, working etc...
