Euchre Bar Trail - Fitness Hike Qual for Half Dome

  • March 22, 2014 · 7:45 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

MEET AT TARGET ON MADISON AND 80 at 7:45 leaving no later than 8:00AM. Or at Starbucks on Elm at 8:30AM leaving no later than 8:45.

We will lose cell service when we get near the trail head so we are asking that everyone meets at the carpool locations. We are headed back out to Euchre Bar Trail for a fitness hike. This will count toward your 1 fitness hike requirement in order to attend half dome. Anyone is welcome on this hike (not just Half Dome attendees).

For those of you who went with us last time, we will not be going through the BEAUTIFUL sights we saw with Kim K. Within the first 2miles the trail descends almost 1,800 feet to some camp sites and a foot bridge.  While steep, the trail is in very good shape with lots of shade. We'll take a short break here before the climb out of the canyon, which is the same way we came in: about 2 miles of steep switchbacks.

We'll take a break at the cars, fill up water if needed (bring your own refills as there is no water source at the parking area). The bathrooms have not had toilet paper either time I've been there (just a heads up). Then we'll start back down again.

YES! We will be taking on the hill twice in one day to test our fitness levels. This will be 8 miles of steep switchbacks. Bring lots of water & Snacks.
Only Very Well Mannered dogs please.

Trailhead: Iron Point/Euchre Bar Trailhead is located 3.5 miles from the Alta Exit at Interstate 80. Go right off the exit and then turn onto Casa Loma Road that parallels I-80 east. Bear to the right and pass over the narrow bridge at canyon creek. Stay on the paved road past and cross RR tracks. Pavement ends at 2.4 miles and at 2.8 miles the road comes back to the tracks. Turn right here, cross the tracks and follow road .7 miles to Iron Point. The path to Iron Point is on the right; go left for porta potty and Euchre Bar Trail parking.  There is minimal parking near the porta potty but there is a parking lot just above it. If you have a vehicle that allows you to off road easily, please use the parking lot and allow the spots near the bathrooms for cars that aren't as out doorsy haha.

Danielle in the upper parking lot, somewhere close to the entrance, Chuck lost one of his shoes, gray tennis shoe size 12. If you see a lone shoe in the upper parking lot grape. Chuck has the, now lonely other shoe.

    • Kim K. A.

Ok, he changed his shoe from sandels to shoes at the back of my truck, except he didn't put both shoes in the truck, just one.

      Find the other lonely shoe!

The elevation at the top was 3,964 elevation at the bottom was 2,018 for a difference of 1,776 x 2 = 3,352. That was a respectable day. I will post the GPS map latter.

Hey Kayla, we are the side of that is facing Madison... We are close to the road in the parking lot.. You should see a large white truck with people around it

Hi everyone, saw some questions in the post... We are meeting at the target off if Madison near 80... Or at the Starbucks in Auburn... If everyone could post under this where they are meeting, please let me know.... We generally don't want people meeting at the hiking spot (unless they have been there before and know for sure where the hike is) because we loose cell service... And if you get lost we won't be in contact to help you... And this hike will take until the afternoon, so we want to be efficient with meeting up time at target and Starbucks... This will allow us to get back at a more earlier time... But I doubt we will be back before 1 pm... Once we all get to the hike, I'll get everyone in a group and talk a bit about half dome and some extra stuff... Can't wait to see you all tomorrow morning :)

Jessica- bring water and some snacks for yourself. You'll want something for energy. Being extra water in your car cause when you're done with the first one, you can refill :) I hope you have so much fun! It's a harder hike today so you'll definitely get to push yourself.

I need to be back in Sacramento by 1. Could you give me an idea of how long the hike will be? I'm thinking I may not have enough time...

I don't think you'll be back by then unless you just do it once

      March 21

Thanks Danielle for the reply. I kind of figured I wouldn't make it in time. Bummer! I guess there is always next weekend. Enjoy the hike!

Do i need special hikinh shoes or will regular sneakers work?

    1 · March 18

    • Danielle Kristina M.

Hi Jessica - It's a pretty steep decline/incline. It's covered in rocks for the first 1/4 mile and then a pretty good amount of leaves for the next mile.

      March 18

    • Danielle Kristina M.

I wore hiking boots and my friend wore sneakers. She made it just fine, but she did feel like she was slipping and having to catch herself a lot. It's definitely a safer trip with the appropriate shoes.

I don't think I was very clear in the "sign up question" as I got a lot of "sure". Will you meet at the Target on Madison or will you meet at the Starbucks off Elm (auburn)? Please comment with one or the other, as meeting at the trail head is not an option due to loss of cell service right off the freeway.

    Thank you <3

    Backpack
I am planning on bringing the backpack I will use for the Half Dome Trip.
Packed with essential what I am going to bring and or just weight to equivalent.
The point is to run up and down Euchre Bar with the actual weight you will be carrying on the actual hike.
The weight is important because among other things the weight from the backpack is what tares up your feet, knees and skin on your feet.
    a) 4 litters of water
    b) First Aid Kit
    c) Camera
    d) GPS
    e) Note Pad, Binoculars, Pen, other small stuff
    f) Food
    g) Socks Extra
    h) The 10 essential
    i) A couple of clay bricks
