Let's meet and talk about "The Goldfinch" by Donna Tartt

I'm flexible on dates and times, with the exception that I do travel some for work. I'm going to inquire if our first meeting could be at the Hive coffee shop in Oakland, and am leaning towards East Bay locations, but can be flexible on that, too.

Thank you Beth for taking the initiative. It was a perfect little group, & good food & wine. I look forward to next mtg.

Am I welcome if I haven't finished the book? To be honest, I really haven't gotten very far at all ... it's been kind of a crazy month. But I still want to meet everyone!

Sure, come on over! We can talk as a group about how to handle this sort of thing on an ongoing basis.

Just a note to the organizer/everyone. The way Meetup.com is structured, it would only work to make two seperate meetings one specifically listed (by the organizer) to be in SF, one in East Bay or to create an entirely different group (in which case someone would have to step up and create the group). To keep it within the same group, someone just needs to "suggest a meetup" in this group for a location in SF. Make sense? I am in Oakland so will be staying with this incarnation of the group.

    Hi Beth,
Sorry, but I won't be able to make it, but I look forward to the next event. I just get off too late from work to get to Oakland in time.

Unfortunately I won't be able to join you on a Tuesday. Is anyone still interested in getting together Monday the 10th around 7 pm in SF?

Thank you Beth for all the legwork! It sounds like a great spot. I've really been enjoying the book, almost hate for it to end.

Would anyone like to join a discussion group of The Goldfinch in West Portal on Sunday, 2/23 say at 1pm (time is flexible)? If you are interested, reply to me and I'll try to organize it at a nearby coffee house. WP is easy to get to on the Muni Metro and parking isn't difficult either.

Hello all--I've been wandering around coffee shops for the past couple of weeks, and finally found one that should work for our first meeting. It's a bit out of the way in the Laurel neighborhood, but doesn't charge a fee to use a nice big space in the back. They have a nice menu of salads and sandwiches, and serve beer and wine, too. I like that they seem community-oriented. The big catch for some of you may be that they're not open late on Mondays, so I changed the date to Tuesday. And as far as splitting into a City vs. East Bay group-- I never heard any more about it. I was wondering if someone did it and just didn't tell me!

Great book choice - I'm halfway through the 800 pages and still captivated. I am in Oakland so please consider me in the East Bay group if splitting.

Hello all, has a location been chosen yet or are we considering splitting into east bay and west bay groups?

Just realized this book is almost 800 pages. I also read books for work, don't think I can hack this too. Maybe next time.

I think I signed up for both. I plan on attending the East Bay meet up. Will take down the RSVP to the SF one when I figure out which one is which.

Confused about the wait list. I didn't signup because I was waiting to see where the location would be. Now that I know there will be one in EBay, it is full? Will there be a new sign up to see who's actually going where, to know if it is in fact "Full"?

It looks like we have people both interested in SF and the East Bay. I can really only do SF... Shall we split???

    January 6, 2014

    • Beth

      I think that's probably a great idea. I'll send out a note.

Would anyone who would rather meet in SF like to get together on a weekend day in February? I live in West Portal where it's easy to park and get to by Muni. I could find a coffee place on WP if say 4 people are interested.

    January 6, 2014

That could work for me, Debbie.

Mondays and Wednesdays don't work for me, and Thursdays would have to be 7:30 or later (assuming we meet in the East Bay somewhere).

I am in SF as well but could meet near Bart if it's in the east bay or join the folks in the city.

I probably can't make it to Oakland. If you decide to meet in SF, I'd be interested. Work mostly in South Bay so it would be hard for me especially on a week night.

I am very excited about The Goldfinch. I have it on my nightstand.

The Goldfinch is written of my current list of "To Read", even though I don't recall what it's about. I'm in the East Bay, so of course prefer it. However, if a location is near BART I can do it. Perhaps alternate?

I'm excited to read Goldfinch! I live in Berkeley but am newly transplanted from the city, so happy to do either, just keep in mind tough commute times, both folks who need to cross the bridge. Saturdays would be ideal for me right now (due to young daughter's schedule), but I can make a Monday evening meeting.

Hi all - it appears we have members who are interested in both sides of the Bay. I am a SF resident and am more than willing to host a discussion there. I had Goldfinch teed up next based on a great personal recommendation.

I love the Hive and hope we meet there. Already read Goldfinch the second it came out, can't wait to discuss it. What a surprise in context and style from Tart.

Beth, what luck! I've been thinking the same thing. I'd love somewhere in SF, say near Montgomery BART or something if possible... Halfway through The Goldfinch now and loving it
