As I check out all of the book club listings here on Meetup, I despair just a little bit--I don't want to be one of 372 members of any book club. I want to be part of a small group of people who know each other--maybe they're even good friends--and talk about books and other things together. So I'm starting my own.
Here's my thought: we'll read mostly current fiction, but flexibly, depending in the whims of the group. We'll determine together how to choose our books (I could decide, but there's lots of more democratic methods). We'll gather monthly, on average. I like book clubs better where we can relax at someone's home, but with a group of strangers, it seems like it's better to start out with a public location. I'd also eventually like to include food in the process, but we'll see how that goes, too.
I'd love to get 8-12 people together who can commit to the idea, and then close the group until we need more members. First book suggestion: Donna Tart's The Goldfinch?
