Zeitgeist Seattle Chapter Meeting

  • Apr 20, 2014 · 2:00 PM
  • Mike's Place

Monthly Zeitgeist Seattle meeting. Updated description with agenda.

Trying it at my place this time to try and have more of a discussion friendly space (not so much ambient noise). Please call me at[masked] if you have any problems getting to the house or finding the entrance (back of house, down the alley is the easiest, but front works too).

Brief overview of TZM if needed

Suggest and plan activities (tabling, screenings, art shows, any other ideas). Sign up and coordinate if interested.

TZM related discussion topics - suggestions welcome. Some things I've noticed recently of interest on the topics of economics and technological unemployment. We can definitely discuss any other topics related to TZM though.

The book "Capital", by Thomas Piketty. Here is an article in the Guardian about it:

There was also a study recently done which essentially purports to verify that the US is in fact an oligarchy at this point, and no longer a democracy or republic. Here is a New Yorker blog post about it:

Also, this is an interesting article about technological unemployment:
All pretty mainstream (Business Insider is a more left leaning popular website, but still decently respected) sources. I think just the level of visibility these issues are getting compared to 5 years ago is pretty amazing. Would make a good discussion topic.

Afterward, people can break into smaller discussion and activity planning groups if interested.

Ack -- forgot to mention that I have cats. Hopefully no one is majorly allergic. Really sorry for posting late. Also, I will have some snacks and simple drinks.

I am going to plan on doing this at my house. We have a good meeting space in the back and I cleared it with my wife and house mates. I'm just down the street from Bluebird, and will add the address to the invite information. If this is an issue for anyone or they would prefer Bluebird, let me know. I'm still open to doing it there, but it is louder and harder to speak across the space.

Also, we have two open parking spots in the driveway behind our house, first come first serve, and the back door will be the easiest as we will be meeting back there. It is marked as 1415 B I think, but it is part of our house. Front or back is fine though. The driveway is down the alley right behind the house (the big blue one).

I agree, it was definitely hard to hear everyone last time. :)

The Victrola option sounds like a good one. I will call and see if that is something I can reserve. I worry about having people have to come into downtown, although I guess it is easier for bus commutes. Thanks for the suggestions!

With Victrola make sure you give them your number, and then call them again a couple of days prior to make sure you still have the room. I've had an unfortunate experience there...

They actually won't take reservations on the weekends during the day, and it sounds like they are very busy at that times, so not really an option. I think I'm going to do it at my place. Going to post a new comment and see if there are any objections/issues with that.

There's also a meeting space in the back of Victrola Coffee on 15th. And we can likely do it where I work at Pike Brewing downtown if we do it at 11 am instead. I'm also willing to host in West Seattle. I'm fine with Bluebird as well, just throwing out options. I thought I had

I have quite a few people from both North and South areas, so I think I'm going to keep it in Capitol Hill, but I am going to try to secure a more 'meeting' like space. Worst case scenario, I will have it at Bluebird again, but I'm going to keep trying to find a better space.

I would love to attend a meeting. I live in Tacoma, but I would come to Seattle for a meet as long as it's not to late at night.

Not saying that because I live there, but there are a few nice places in the U-district, such as Trabant, Allegro and Ugly Mug. If you wanna try one of them I suggest just calling them to check whether that time slot will be a quiet time at their location or not.
