Linked Jazz Project & Journey On

Our followup Meetup is set for June 14th at Barnard College! Cristina Pattuelli, an Assistant Professor at the School of Information and Library Science at the Pratt Institute, will be presenting her latest work on the Linked Jazz Project. Also, we'll hear from member Shea Elmore, who will talk about his latest project, Journey On, which he directed and produced in collaboration with the interactive performance group Playing with Reality.

Linked Jazz is an ongoing project investigating the potential of the application of Linked Open Data (LOD) technology to enhance the discovery and visibility of digital cultural heritage materials. More specifically, the project explores the applicability of Friend-Of-A-Friend (FOAF) to digital archives of jazz history to expose relationships between musicians and reveal their community’s network. New modes of connecting cultural data and making them searchable as a whole in a seamless discovery environment would open unprecedented opportunities to create new kinds of meaning and elicit new streams of interpretation. The goal of this project is to help uncover meaningful connections between documents and data related to the personal and professional lives of musicians who often practice in rich and diverse social networks.

Location: Barnard College, Room 501 in the Diana Center.

Cristina Pattuelli, Principal Investigator, is an Assistant Professor at the School of Information and Library Science at the Pratt Institute, New York. Her research focuses on information organization and knowledge representation methods and tools applied to information systems. Her current area of research is semantic web technologies applied to cultural heritage resources. She holds a Ph.D. in Information and Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as advanced degrees in Philosophy and in Cultural Heritage Studies from the University of Bologna, Italy.

Shea Elmore, is a theatre producer, director and inter-actor with Playing with Reality. Creating and developing interactive performances and using narrative improvisation, Shea has brought together a company of artists to collaborate with audience members.  Using professional applications, ordinary individuals are offered rare one-time theatrical experiences. Journey On (May 17 - June 10 at The Secret Theatre) streams the performance live from one space to the audience sitting in another.

Light beverages and snacks will be served.

The first event I attended for this group, and it was terrific. The presentation of the Linked Jazz project was particularly strong, and laid out complex information in a clear and methodical way. Great content overall - I look forward to future events!

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
