Crossplatform Mobile Apps with Xamarin

Wouldn’t it be nice to develop a mobile App with C# and Visual Studio that runs on Android, iOS and WP8? Additionally with native Look & Feel and platform-specific features for a familiar user experience? This is possible with the Xamarin tool chain. It is based on Mono, an open .Net implementation according to the ECMA standard for C#. This presentation will show how an App with a cross-platform architecture can be developed. Using common engineering practices (like TDD, CI, etc.), we also discuss our experience from several projects. We use a demo application which runs on Android, iPhone and Windows, and has been implemented to a large extent with the MvvmCross framework.

The speakers knew what they were talking about and they touched all important aspects. GREAT! Hint: Do not forget that people have appointments or need to go to toilet. A small break of 5 mins in the middle would be good. And by all means finish the event on time (and let people give you credits for your great work) then add free question session afterwards.

Hi Martin, thanks for the tip on the break... who else would like to have a quick break? On other side we did not put a end time on this event so I guess the speakers "ended on time" it was our issue, from the organizers to provide an estimated ending time... will do better next time!!

    Hello.
Thank you very much for your feedback.

Please note there is also a Microsoft Developer TechTalk at 2nd April 2014 about Xamarin. Further information can be found here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/de-ch/aa570302.aspx?EventID=f27faab4-2a00-4eba-aa69-9c892d481725

Sorry about the missing break. I didn't know that there was strict a time limit. Adding the free question session afterwards (after the break) is a very good idea for further talks.

Cool I managed to slip in from the waiting list! It's my first attendance to a meet-up. All I need to do is just come, is that correct?

According to Microsoft at today's ALM day, people with MSDN subscriptions can get a 35% - 50% discount on a Xamarin license. According to a Microsoft person, you find it by accessing your member page and, instead of the "report a problem" or other options, choose "other benefits", and it'll show up there. Best regards, Tim

I am really looking forward to this talk. Just a small non-technical question up front: any chance that we have a little information about the licensing models for Xamarin as well? I would like to know the real costs for doing such a project.

    • Antoine H.

      Hi Graham

We will give a brief overview of the licensing model at the speak.

Generally you need a license for each platform you want to develop (e.g. one for Android, one for iOS).

The cheapest is the Indie license for 299$/year. The free license limits you in app size.
