I got 25 emails discussing US television.
Can you guys take this discussion to your private emails?

Hi Guys,

Nora mentioned www.glocals.com in her below reply. I'm one of the guys running glocals.com, and I'd like to add 2 quick comments relevant for Nora's point:

1. You guys are welcome to discuss various topics on our forums. All free.

2. You guys are invited to join our free BBQ this coming Thu (Aug 7), on the rooftop terrace of Jelmoli (in center town). All the free-BBQ details

Thanks, and hope this was relevant to you (althigh slightly off topic...(-:

The group email is really meant to be used to send out notifications of events for meetups. If folks want to advertise services or discuss one way of doing things over another, why not use the forums out there already set up for it, like:-
or
the ZH expat group off yahoo groups.

Lets agree to keep the meetup mail notifications for what it was intended for - notifications of upcoming events.

And no, like most other folks, who don't want the emails like this trail, i don't want to turn off the mail notification for the meetup group as it will mean i not only miss these emails (which can be of interest) but also i will miss notification of upcoming events.

Thanks everyone

why buy series and have to store or resell?  You can rent full seasons of shows at Elm Video in Zurich. The owner of the shop, Ms. Joey Macht is a member of the American Club.

I agree with Claudia that this price is very high. I think that when the price comes down to $20-$30/month (plus start-up fees) it will be a big hit in the expat community. Some corporations will of course offer this to their expats. But it will not be an option for many. Another alternative is to do what the cable TV stations do. Offer a basic package for a more reasonable price and a "gold package" with everything for $159. That way you can appeal to a wider public.

Claudia, I guess everyone finds their own solution. Our solution has been to buy our favorite TV shows on DVD from Amazon, Ebay or Exlibris. For about Sfr 30 you can get 1 year of Friends, Frasier or any of a number of TV shows and watch them Commercial-Free.

One thing that has always driven me crazy about US TV is the ads that appear every 3 minutes. While I would love to watch US TV, paying $159/month and watching endless ads is too much for me. We will stick to buying DVDs.

Any thought about listing in local currency?  Some of us are here a long time and will remain.  $159/ month is quite pricey.
We already pay a mandatory (cable) fee of about SFr 30/ month (State Radio and TV Tax)  and the principal service here CableCom is digitalizing many channels so for their box it is SFr 6/ month and I pay an extra SFR 25/mo for movie channels such as TCM and E-Entertainment extra English language channels (British). I can understand the set-up fee, but the monthly fee is steep.

Also in Switzerland, the Swiss channels do air a lot of American series in dual tone, so we can see them in English; however, they are dated - we get them in batches over several weeks and then have to wait.  Licensing fees are high as all go over Germany and the stations have to pay for the German / French language overdub and separately for the original English sound.
We get Jay Leno about a week late, at midnight during the week and at 21:00 hours on weekends.

I would LOVE to get these channels but $159 / month is too steep.

However, I will spread the word for you.

regards,
