Weekend in Ticino (Valle Maggia)

  • Apr 6, 2013 · 7:00 AM

Dear All,

In order to give the muscles some rest from the (off) piste skiing, I suggest to do a hiking weekend in Ticino in the Valle Maggia.

The idea would be to take the 7.09 am train departing Zurich HB (I still need to make reservation) arriving 9.57 am in Locarno and then take the 10.02 am bus to Maggia (arrival 10.29 am). From here we would start hiking for 4 hours towards Ponte Brolla (details see below). The hike will be on an altitude of 300 to 500 meters above sea level where  one can enjoy a full view of the lower valley, the wide landscape, the beautiful villages and the tall mountains.

Details of the hike :

02:10: In Dunzio weiterhin Richtung Tegna wandern.

In Ponte Brolla (where the European Cliff Diving championships took place) there are some great views on the gorge created by the erosion. From Ponte Brolla we will take the bus/train back to Locarno (15 min ride) and then we walk towards our hostel (10 minutes from the station).

After dinner we can go downtown and enjoy the Ticinese atmosphere at night.

For Sunday I suggest an easy stroll in the city and around the Lake for a couple of hours and then in late afternoon we would take train back to Zurich.

The hostel gave me following prices

* 2 bed room (bunk bed) with shower and WC on floor, but sink in the room: 63 francs (69 francs)

* twin beds with shower and WC on floor, but sink in the room: 80 francs (86 francs)

* 4 bed room (bunk bed) with shower and WC on floor, but sink in the room: 58 francs (64 francs)

The prices are per person/night and include breakfast and dinner (salat buffet, main plate and dessert). The prices between brackets are for those who are not a member of youth hostel.

Please note that the hostel does not allow to make reservations, hence I could not take an option for our group. I agreed that I will confirm final numbers next week wednesday to them. Therefore please transfer money to my bank account by tuesday evening the latest and given that it takes 1 or two days to have the transfer executed, please make the transfer before Monday next week.

IMPORTANT

* The organizer is not responsible for any bodily injury or other accidents that might happen during the hike. By signing up on this activity, the participants agree that the organizer will not be held responsible in any way. Although the hike is not complicated, it is each individual responsibility to ensure that they can do the hike and check out the trail.

* There is a no refund policy – anyone else can take your spot. This policy has been introduced to avoid people making changes and cancellations for reasons that can not be verified by the organizer.

* To bring along : hiking boots, rain gear, water, snack, lunch ( I suggest we take lunch on the trails)

* Since we start hiking immediately upon arrival, please travel light.

    Dear All,

For those who still need to transfer me some money - i.e. paid for 4 bed instead of 2 bed, 10 francs for late cancellations etc. please do so in the next week (but before week-end ). Thanks.

Hi Patrick, wow, Locarno was beautiful, thanks for organizing! I originally paid 64 CHF for a 4 bed, but stayed in a 3 bed. If they charged you anything more than 64 CHF for my room, let me know and I will pay the difference for my share. Cheers.

      April 7, 2013

    • Axel M.

Same here, let me know if you got charged more for the 3 bed.

Is anyone else doing a day trip from Zurich tomorrow who doesn't have a GA? If so, I wouldn't mind teaming up to buy a one day card, and one companion card (total cost 106CHF) and splitting the cost. Would work out cheaper than two people paying ~70CHF for the return trip.

If anyone is interested, please message me. Cheers!

    IMPORTANT

Please note that SBB has rebooked us on the train departing 7.01 am instead of 7.09 am - our reservation/wagon is highly likely in the front of the train. We can meet under the weird angel in the main station at 6.40 -6.45 am, in case you are later please go directly to the train. From 6.45 onwards we will walk to the train since from ticket office to front of the train it takes at least 5 minutes if not more.

Hi Liz, I also get up in Zug. I bought a ticket on the station, the lady said the details for the 7:01 Zurich train are as below:

Hi Patrick, I will arrive 6:50 at the train station, so I will go directly to the train (1. Wagon of the train). my mobile phone:[masked] in case...thanks, chin

  • Patrick

In case anybody wants to join the group for evening dinner tomorrow night, this is possible however i would need to communicate this tonight. The hostel said that up to 5 people could come additionally without any additional booking, but if more than 5 would like to come, she would need to know. I just got a call from the youth hostel whereby someone (in respect for that person I will not divulge the name) said that they are from meet up and they can no longer make it. This person was not part of those who already paid me (20 people). Please please, it is fine to make your own reservations (under your name) but please do not call the hotel and start messing up a meet up booking which has been made and confirmed. Thanks.

See you tomorrow - remember we are at 7.01 AM train

I would like to join dinner at the hostel, as I will be staying at another hotel... Thanks

Ignore my last comment, I got tickets at HB. I was worried the times of departure would matter when buying tickets, but that's not the case.

      April 4, 2013

    • Patrick

I am hoping that with my GA I do not need train/bus tickets. Those who need to buy tickets, I suggest you buy a ticket till Maggia from Zurich, then a ticket from Ponte Brolla to Locarno. Given that we only have 5 minutes between Locarno arrival and departure bus you can imagine that buying tickets is not a good option. Also with 40 plus people you can imagine that the bus conductor gets irritated.

      April 4, 2013

  • Patrick

    Dear All,

I have not really seen the group decrease - on the contrary several people additionally asked me to come. No problem. This however causes some logistics challenges since from Locarno we need to get by bus to the start of the hike. I will try to book for 35 -40 people the bus.

Patrick, I'm going down on Friday afternoon, and I've booked private accommodations. I'll see you on Saturday at the train sta in Locarno.

      March 31, 2013

  • Ines

Hi Patrick, I am not sure about this weekend plans, and prefer to leave the place enough early to let a person on the waiting list have a chance to join.

    March 30, 2013

      many thanks

      March 21, 2013

  • Farnoush

one spot available! can i take it?! :)

    March 21, 2013

  • Patrick

    IMPORTANT

In the past it happened frequently that people sign up for activities and then within the last couple of days or evening before cancelled without giving any reason why they can no longer attend. I respect data privacy and do not need to know your private story however please be aware that the organizer has booked trains, buses etc. for which the booking is free however in case nobody shows up the organizer get charged financially for the group not showing up. Also by clicking no /cancelling immediately before the event, you basically take a spot away from other people would like to come.

Therefore I will start charging 10 francs for people who do not show up and/or cancel after March 30. I understand that there might be changes in business schedules and/or private events, however usually these do not come to light overnight.

Have now following bookings - Chedda (twin), Philippe/Patrick/Axel (3 bed room), Chin/Janice (2bed), Gaye/Liliana (2 bed),Sabrina/Liz (2 bed), Katie/Cristina (2 bed), Dan/Robert/Bruno (3 bed), Kathleen/Bilge (2 bed), Bea (2). Total 20 persons. Anybody who wants to now wants to come additionally needs to make there own bookings.

    March 21, 2013

  • Patrick

Dear All, please do not send any more money to me since I will not make any bookings anymore.

    March 20, 2013

  • Farnoush

    Hi Patrcik,
any chance to join to this hiking event now?!

    March 20, 2013

  • Kathleen

A tip for such a big group ... the person at the back makes sure they are the last and everyone else in front of them.... but... if you leave the path for any reason (like needing to use the bushes :) please tell someone to wait for you OR leave your backpack at the side of the path and the person(s) behind you can stop and wait for you to come back to your pack.

    March 20, 2013

  • Kathleen

Hi Patrick, I know the Ticino fairly well. I can bring along all the details of your Saturday hike and stay at the back to help ensure no one gets lost. I dont need to go fast on the hike. Will bring my camera to take photos and happily linger at the back to help out. I also know how to get us all back to the hostel just in case.

    March 20, 2013

  • Patrick

Have now 20 people staying at the hostel. Elisabetta is a local from Ticino and Kathleen/Tanya made own reservations. So 23. I typically do not block or forbid people attending activities, so also will not do now but I still think that the Group should be reduced to 30 or 30ish at a maximum. If more people insist in coming, this is fine to me but please be aware that it will be more difficult to keep the Group together, not loosing people on the trails etc.

    March 19, 2013

  • Bea

Hi Patrick, could you please confirm you have received payments for us two ? Thanks

    March 19, 2013

    • Patrick

Hi Bea, have received the payment.

      March 19, 2013

    • Patrick

Your room has been confirmed. I now have 20 people confirmed.

      March 19, 2013

  • Patrick

Just to let you know - at the moment of booking no more 4 bed rooms are available. So far have made and obtained reservation for Chedda (twin), Philippe/Patrick/Axel (3 bed room), Chin/Janice (2bed), Gaye/Liliana (2 bed),Sabrina/Liz (2 bed), Katie/Iona (2 bed), Dan/Robert/Bruno (3 bed), Kathleen/Bilge (2 bed).
For Bea (2) submitted request -waited for confirmation. So we have 20 people booked for weekend, a number of people who made bookings themselves. If we assume a number of people do not show up than we should be around 30 which is still large, but OK.

What a great weekend you have planned! I agree, too many folks: to go by ourselves some weekend, could I get a map, or is everything well marked?

Patrick provided a very good description in the introduction. The map can be bought in any book store, e.g. Orellfüsli or simply downloaded for free from the map.geo.admin.ch website. Have fun :-)

I spoke too soon the other day...I hit "submit" on PostFinance's website to transfer the money, and then went to post the above message that I paid, but then looked back and saw that there was an error in the transfer. I called PostFinance, and they said their site was under maintenance, and would be for most of the weekend. Only now could I log in and successfully transfer the 64 CHF, hope you get it by Tues.

Hi Patrick, I just made a payment of CHF 64 for a bed in a 4 bed room. Thanks for organizing!

    March 18, 2013

  • Patrick

    Dear All,

I should have set earlier a limit to this activity. I do not want to go hiking with 40 or 50 people for obvious reasons. First of all the speed of the participants is different, it is difficult to go to restaurants with large groups, train/bus reservations will become more cumbersome and in large groups it is more difficult to get to know each other.

When limiting the group I am giving priority to those staying for the full weekend, regular hikers and then on a first come first serve basis. Thanks for your understanding.

    March 13, 2013

    • Patrick

So far payments received from Philippe, Axel, Robert,Chedda (2), Janice, Chin, Gaye, Dan, Sabrina and Liz K.
