Walenstadt–Murg

We hike from Walenstadt to Quinten and take the boat to Murg. It is expected to take 4 hours according to the myswitzerland website; see link below. It will probably take an extra hour for us so we can stop and enjoy the views.  The path is listed as medium difficulty, medium grade according to the site.

Here is the agenda:
• Arrive at Walenstadt at 09:22.

o 08:00, meet under the Blue Angel. (I will join later at Wadenswil because I live in Au ZH).
o 08:12, DEPART Zurich HB platform 8.
o 08:57, EXIT train at Ziegelbrucke. I join at 08:32 at Wadenswil.
o 09:02, DEPART Ziegelbrucke platform 7.
o 09:22, EXIT train at Walenstadt.

• Hike: Walenstadt – Garadur – Au – Quinten. Height difference is 420m. We will break around noon to have lunch, bring your lunch.
• Take a boat to Murg. These leave every 45 minutes or so and take 15 minutes.
• Take the train back to Zurich. Return time might be around 16:30 but could be earlier or later.

Things to bring:
• Lunch
• Water
• Sunscreen

It was great! I met some very nice people and the views were beautiful. The only thing which could have improved the walk for me, if we had one or two 5-10 minute-breaks, at places from where the views were the best and when the sun was out.

Thank you ! I found a lot of very helpful information from the Heidiland tourism board and have already inquired about dogs being allowed on cable cars and it was a green light. Now all i have to do is recruit the dogs and people and people who like dogs!!

    Hell Burr,
I will be visiting Staefa, near Zurich from 24th July to mid August. In the past I have bought a monthly pass which enables me to travel on land and lake within certain zones for that particular time period. It would be a great help to me if you and other hike leaders would post the zones so I will have some idea whether it would be more beneficial for me to purchase a 1/2 pass or other ticket. I will be perusing all the hikes posted from now until I arrive and look forward to meeting you all then.
    Thankyou.

Thankyou Burr, the reason I asked about the zones is I noticed Kathleen mentions them and I found it helpfull. I visit Switzerland often and since I do major hikes in Canada, I thought it might be fun to incorporate the same in Switzerland. That is where "Meet-Up" comes in. I have been a member for some time. I thank you very much for your reference to the alternative website:My Switzerland...." etc. I have no problem filling my days as I have family in Staefa. I look forward to pursuing what I really love and enjoy, which is hiking.

Hello, in case of a spot opening I would join you directly at the Walenstadt train station. Cheers, Susanne

I'm not overly familiar with the Swiss rail system yet - is there a group day pass or other discount, or do we just each buy a ticket on the way there and one on the way back?

    May 19, 2013

    • Erin

Thanks for the quick response. The day passes are much more expensive, based on the online information.
