Bellinzona: old churches and older (medieval) battles

On Sunday May 23rd 2010, the imperial army of Frederick RedBeard is about to set off a new attack against the Communes. Our goal is to meet in Bellinzona, travel back in time to the year 1176 a.D. and witness the outcome of the battle. A possible meeting place could be on the stairs of the Collegiata church around 11.00 a.m.: if you arrive by train**, that's the first church you meet, by walking left of the station and going down Via della Stazione (it takes 5-10 minutes on foot to get to the church). If you prefer, we can meet at 10.40 am at the station. While waiting for the afternoon action to take place, a morning hike may be in order: the idea is to reach the castle of Sasso Corbaro by walking through Prada, a hamlet in the nearby woods of Ravecchia. It may have little to do with the fashion industry, but they say it's pretty, with plenty of old frescoes. If we are lucky, we may even see the churches from the inside. Once we reach Prada, the 3rd castle (Sasso Corbaro) will be near. If there's nothing going on in Sasso Corbaro, we'll head down to castle #2 (Montebello), where all the battles and jousting take place. They usually have some inviting grill stands, so there will also be plenty of food! The hike will be around 2 hours long, 5 km long and with a 300 metre height gap. It should be easy, as it's on an old mule track: you can see the details on the map at
http://www.bellinzona... (which is referred to by
http://www.bellinzona... ) You may read more about the so called Chestnut Itineraries on:
http://www.ticino.ch/...
http://www.wanderland... To finish the day, we might have a Ticinese dinner at the Cat Cellar, before heading back home. If you have any doubts, feel free to write me a message! By email it's always better, but if you have an urgent question you may also text me at +393472288060. Cheers! I had a great time! The castles and the medieval festival were very nice, and I had the chance to meet a lot of nice people as well. It was very nice to meet you all and hope to see you in the next meetups.
Thanks Andrea for organizing this event!

It was my first time with the meet up group and it was wonderful! Great people and amazing things to see. I loved that we also got to go to the festival at Castello di Montebello with the jousting and jesters. Very fun day =)

If bonus tracks are a way of increasing the desirability and the selling of an audio CD, then I hope you liked the "bonus kilometres" included in this hike :-P Pity that La Spada was so crowded and had no polenta&luganighe, pity that if in the future Rafael commits a crime, I'll be the one going to jail :) Seriously, thanks everyone for the splendid company in Bellinzona! (i.e. city of cats :-) )

Although thsi was not such an "easy" hike as I thought I was glad shwoing up cause the people were very nice and the tour scenic. We even found the "good" pizza place in the end and got rewarded with a pizza as big as a wheel. Special thanks to the "last" 5 standing: Raffael, Chelsea, Andrea and "The Terminator" ;))) Hope to see you all soon. Bises Alessa

Thanks Andrea. I figured the connectio thru Zurich was the best for me in manyways. Plus, I'll get to spend more time with the people from Zurich, so I would place the trust in the SBB :) Cheers! Vasu

Hi Vasu, you could also go to Arth Goldau and hop aboard the train from Zurich to Bellinzona. At least, if it were Italy, I would never rely on 9 minutes' train interconnection time!

To everyone: quick recap of all possibile meeting points. 8 am in Zurich under blue angel; 10.40 am somewhere in Bellinzona station; 11.15 on the stairs of the Collegiata Church; 11.30 inside S.Biagio in Ravecchia. By then, hopefully boarding of people should be completed, and the journey may take off :-D

Hi folks. I am coming from Basel, and figured I have a concenient connection via Zurich. So I would arrive at Zurich at 8 AM, and catch the 8.09 train along with you all. I dont know exactly where the angel is, so I would meet you at the beginning of platform 4 where the train is scheduled to depart from. If you see a lost Indian man, please wave :)

Sad but true: I just realized now that the Cat Cellar is open on Sunday afternoon only. It's a big loss, as it has great atmosphere and is an awesome place where to end a hiking day.

Anyway, see you all on Sunday! either at the Bellinzona train station when you arrive or on the stairs of Collegiata church around 11.00/11.15.

To Alessandra: the blue angel is not exactly on a diet, I'm sure you'll spot her :-)

Hello everybody, as suggested by Andrea and Veronika, let's meet at 8 under the angel, and take the train of 8:09.
Don't be late, and have your ticket ready...

Hi Gurgel, be sure to bring a camera, as Bellinzona is an extraordinary place! As for the hiking bit, I suppose any shoes that are not too fancy are fine, since it's a mule track.

Yes, my train is supposed to arrive in Bellinzona at 10.34... if it's on time (which is not to be taken for granted! Last Sunday my train from Genova to Milano had one hour delay)

Hi Andrea.. it sounds like a good program! It will be my first time hiking.. any advice? I am coming from ZH, so if anyone wants to meet beneath the big blue "angel" at 8:00 am so we can head to the train (ICN departure at 8:09 from track 4). Andy, I assume your train is arriving at 10:40 am in Bellinzona?

Hi Guillaume, I'll be coming from Milano, so we'll be travelling in opposite directions. Perhaps you can arrange a meeting place (blue angel?) in Zurich station?

From Zurich, I see there are direct trains at 8.09 and 8.31.
Zürich HB 08:09 ICN Bellinzona 10:23
Zürich HB 08:31 IR Bellinzona 11:05

Hope to see you on Sunday!
