Brienzer Rothorn: Choose Your Way Up

Brünig-Hasliberg - Brienzer Rothorn

Hello all,

It’s getting late in the summer and we don’t have too many more weekends we’ll be able to see the higher trails. I’m proposing a day in which all will be able to make it to the top of one of the nicest mountains in Switerland, Brienzer Rothorn, one way or another.

We have four options to get to the top depending on what’s a nice day out for you. We’ll meet at Brünig-Hasliberg at 10:00, go our paths (listed below), and meet again at Brienzer Rothorn at 15:00. People can then leave when they’d like by the train.

A little about Brienzer Rothorn:

http://www.wanderland.ch/en/services/places/ort-0473.html

The restaurant there:

http://www.brienz-rothorn-bahn.ch/en/extras/restaurant-rothorn-kulm.html

The train up and down:

http://www.brienz-rothorn-bahn.ch/en.html

The Options Up

1) Hike up

Take Trail 65 - topomap

This is a hike that requires some training and strength. If you don’t hike much the other options are probably better for you. 1500m (1800m) up in 5 hours (6h 45m).  I'll be taking this one.

I have two sets of numbers because I have conflicting information from the Wanderland website and the Switzerland Mobility website. The Switzerland Mobility website is the first set and the one I trust more.

http://www.wanderland.ch/en/routes/etappe-01577.html

2) NOT AVAILABLE BECAUSE OF LIFT CLOSINGS: Hike to Lungern, take the lifts to the high ridge and hike the rest.

<><><>UPDATE 02/09<><><><><><>

Lift website with notice of closure:

http://www.panoramawelt.ch/en/sport-unterhaltung/bergbahnen

This is a permanent closure.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

3) Hike to Brienz, take the train up, walk the ridge as much as you’re comfortable

Take Trail 4, ViaJacobi, to Brienz. 2h 36m. 158m up, 600m down. topomap
Take the 1 hour train ride up.

UPDATE 02/09: Optional second part is to hike the ridge to Arnihaaggen and then return.  2h 30m.  552m up, 552m down.  topomap pt2

You’ll hike this one from Brünig-Hasliberg to Brienz:

http://www.wanderland.ch/en/routes/etappe-01173.html

4) Take the train to Brienz, take the train up, sit at the restaurant

If you’re not up for much physical activity that’s fine too and this option is here for you. Even come a bit later in the day if you’d like.

5) Take the bus to Glaubenbielen, Parkplatz, hike up from the north side.  4h.  980m up, 430m down.

A nice alternative to option 1.

Logistics / Other Stuff

Meet at 7:50 under the angel.  Train for Luzern leaves at 08:04, change trains there. Take the train to Brünig-Hasliberg.  1h 51m.

Better take some snacks, water, and jacket (it will be cool there).
If it is forecast to rain more than 1cm during our hiking time I’ll cancel however others can still go if they’d like. I’ll post updates.

This event is very relaxed, try to keep your attending status current but no big deal, last minute friends can come, dogs are welcome, etc.

Bring money for drinks, lifts, train...
