Hiking in Swiss National Park

  • October 19, 2013 · 6:30 AM

Dear All,

The idea would be to go hiking for about 4 to 5 hours in the Swiss National Park. This park is a protected area where you can see nature at its best. We will not be affected by the hunting season as hunting is not permitted in the National Park. Hiking is done all the time on an altitude between 1800 and 2200 meters - the hiking trial is technically easy and almost there are not too many altitude meters to be crossed. We will hike from P1 to P9.

The area is in a remote part of Switzerland (on border with Italy) so it takes a while to get there.

We will take the following trains

Zurich 6.37 am – Landquart 7.41 am

Landquart 7.49 am – Saglians 8.53 am

Saglians 8.56 am – Zernez 9.06

Zernez 9.15 am – start hike 9.26 am

Late afternoon we will take the train/bus back.

To bring along:

* You are doing this hike on your own responsibility - the organizer is not taking any responsibility and declines all responsibility for claims/damages.

* Suncream / Sunglasses

* Good mood/Smile

* Snacks, water, food for along the way

* As we are in the mountain and weather can change any time please bring along rain-gear

PS If there is minimal rain the hike will go through as planned however in case the weather forecast provides for significant rain then I will cancel this hike.

IMPORTANT:

* As we need to do a bus to the start of the hike, it is important that I know exactly how many people will come. I will make a group reservation (at no cost for you) however in case our group does not show up I get charged several hundred francs, so it is important that once you sign up and say that you are coming, you will be effectively coming. To avoid that people change ideas last minute and I get stuck with reservations, I will charge a flat fee of 10 francs for cancellations made within 1 week of the hike (from saturday 12 october onwards).

    This hike was GREAT!!
The organisation was superb and everything went very well. The route and the pace was sufficiently challenging in places to allow for a good workout if you were so inclined, although the breaks incorporated allowed everyone to regroup frequently. We were extremely lucky with the weather too so the rugged nature of the Park and the spectacular views could be enjoyed in warm sunshine. A great experience.

Sorry, with the snow and the changes it seems to have switched from 4-5 hours of hiking to something between 6 and 7 hours and that's a bit much for me.
    Have fun!

    October 18, 2013

    • Patrick

Dear Deborah - Given that I do not know the exact amount of snow and condition of all Group members it is difficult to come up with a precise estimate of time, however I still think that more or less 5 hours is realistic.

      October 18, 2013

  • Patrick

I then suggest to walk from P6 to P4 which is flat and take 30 to 45 min and then from P4 we walk towards the top of Alp La Schera which is a 350 m altitude climb (towards 2050 meters). On the top of the mountain there are spectacular views on the Italian Lake. This takes about 2 hours. We then either walk back to P4 or P5 and take the bus back towards Zernez.

Just to update everyone- the hike is definitely ON. Last weekend when I was there the trail contained 50 to 60 cms snow but given that the trail had been prepared by someone, you could put your footsteps in those. With the warmer weather the last couple of days I am expecting that some of the snow disappeared but there might still be some.

Because the trail is still closed after P8 and the nature trail between P6 and P8 is not that spectacular, I suggest to make a small alteration to the plan. We will still go from P1 to P6 (normally 2 hours - now 2.45 hours with snow), there we can have a drink/soup for those who want. Although also warm meals can be ordered here, with a large group we would easily loose 1,5 hours here so I do not want to do this. I suggest we have a break here (45 mins or so).

Just wanted to ask, if the hike will be on as some of the trails are now closed - e.g. routes starting at P1?

    October 15, 2013

    • Patrick

The hike will be on unless the next three days it starts to snow uninterruptedly. Will advise on thursday evening/friday morning about final trail.

      October 15, 2013

    • Deborah

      Okay, thank you.

      October 15, 2013

  • Kai

Hey Patrick. Just wondering when and how will you charge the reservation fee?

    October 14, 2013

    • Patrick

Dear Kai, I think the explanation above is self-explanatory. How? I just send you email with my bank details.

      October 14, 2013

    • Kai

Haven't received anything, yet. Could you try again?

      October 15, 2013

  • Patrick

Did some hiking in the area last weekend - there was about 40 cm snow on the trails- although it is fully OK to come with waterproof boots, you could also bring your snow-shoes to test these out. Saw some deer and male gemsbok.
