Snowshoe Hiking on Furka (Realp - Tiefenbach )

  • Mar 21, 2014 · 7:00 AM

Dear All,

This weekend it starts snowing again, therefore the idea is to do this last minute (snowshoe) hike on friday. We will walk over the winter hiking path or can use our snowshoes. The start of the hike is Realp and after 7km hike (less than 2 hours) we would get to restaurant Tiefenbach.

The winter hiking trail from Realp to Tiefenbach offers a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in this winter wonderland. At each bend on the trail you gain a little more height and after two hours walking you will reach Tiefenbach. Most of the some 560 metres of altitude gain occurs at the beginning. The second half of this seven-kilometre route is much flatter.

The winter hiking trail from Realp to Tiefenbach runs on the pass road towards Furka. Even in winter the Hotel Tiefenbach, at 2106 metres above sea level, is a good place for hungry hikers to stop for a bite to eat.In winter it is quiet on the Furka. If you have not been there yourself when it is free of snow, you will find it hard to believe that the route is full of cars and motor cycles in the summer. The Furka steam railway also does not run in winter. The Furka Pass road is in hibernation.

We will take the 7.09 am train arriving at 7.48 am in arth Goldau, departing Arth at 7.53 am arriving Goschenen 8.49 am and then departing Goschenen at 9.12 arriving 9.50 am in Realp.

To bring along:

* snowshoes/waterproof hiking boots

* water

* poles

* winterjacket, gloves

* suncream

* positive attitude

    The 7km winter hiking path up to Tiefenbach can be done by snowhoes, touring skis or just regular hiking boots. Just outside the marked path we sank into deep snow partly to the knees. Hotel Tiefenbach even offered us a sledge to come down again and to drop off at the end near Realp station. Nice and easy tour to do in one day.

    Hi Patrick,
    sorry, but I need to cancel. I was ill at home for the last two days, and would be off work tomorrow, but I still feel not well enough to exercise....sorry!

    Hi there,
    are you guys taking it easy if I am not as fit as you are? I might need a bit longer than 2h to climb 500m on snowshoes...I join in Zurich, where do you want to meet?

      Hi Sabine, I propose to meet under the blue weird angel in zurich main station next to ticket counter shortly before 7am and at 7am we can go towards the train.

      Sabine, I am not in the best shape either - we will enjoy the landscape and take the time that is needed to get to/from the hotel

    Hi Patrick, i would suggest not to take snowshoes as they are not really necessary (they could provide few short cuts but not much). However, you might want to take sledges for the way back. Enjoy

      Unless, you really went there in the last days, I would highly recommend to take the snow shoes.
