Schwyz to Pfaffikon SZ Trail Run Trail Run (36km 1800m elevation gain)

Please note, this is a run not a hike!

The plan is to run from Schwyz to Pfaffikon. You will see from the route profile below that the run starts with a steep ascent towards Gross Mythen, continues along a ridge and down into Einseildeln before there's a short climb up to the Etzel before we drop down to Pfaffikon to jump on a train back to Zurich.  A tough run with 1800m of climbing over 36km.  For the very fit only!

For those that have the appropriate technology, please use the link below for the gps file of the route.

http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId=yxjbixauwzriuoni

This should avoid people getting lost once we separate due to different running speeds.  I will also bring along copies of the map so you know where to go.

Plan to finish the run at around 5-6 hours, hopefully!

Trains

Plan is to take 12:09 train from Zurich HB arriving in Schwyz at 13:00, meeting under the angel at 11:50am and move to the train shortly after, tickets in hand.

Essential equipment to bring with you:

• Trail running shoes

• Backpack

• Mobile / cell-phone (switched on at all times)

• Insulation blanket (it can be very cold if you get wet and have to stop due to injury)

• Water-proof jacket in case it rains

• A warm long sleeved layer in case it gets cold, particularly with the altitude.

• Water and nutrition (gels, bars, etc) to keep you going for 7-8 hours running (includes safety margin in case of delays).  Also, please bring lunch as there will be no restaurants on the route.

If weather looks horrible i may cancel the event. It´s no fun running in the rain!!

I hope to organize more of these runs over the next few months in preparation for some summer running i have planned. Please let me know if you are interested in these kind of activities in the future and i would be very pleased to hear of suggestions for routes. If you have a run/route you particularly like the look of with hopefully a gpx file that i can upload please let me know.

Gents, the weather forecast for the weekend is HOT (28/29 degrees). Once we get to the base on Grosse Mythen it's not obvious where there will be available water (no black squares on the map indicating buildings, i.e. farms) until Einsieldeln. There may be 20km in the middle without available water refills so I recommend carrying an extra bottle of water to be safe.

    Hi,

Looks interesting, I think the height gain and the distance should be doable but it depends on how fast you would be doing it. Any indicative pace (or flat pace equivalent) to give me some idea? cheers,
    Chris
