Skiing in Grindelwald area with magnificent views on Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau

  • Feb 22, 2013 · 4:15 PM

Dear All,

The idea would be to go skiing in Grindelwald for the weekend. Hence we would travel on friday night and return sunday late afternoon.

Grindelwald ski area is highly popular because of the magnificent views on Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau and because of the large Grindelwald/Wengen ski area. Three weeks before we go, the famous Lauberhorn ski race will take place here with thousands of swiss supporters next to the race. February is the ideal month to go since Grindelwald is not that high as other resorts and therefore it is best to go in the middle of the season. The area is considered intermediate with slopes for everyone.

I have taken an option for 22 spots in the Grindelwald youth hostel (beautiful old chalet) and i have asked for rooms for 2 people and 4 people (i have left out the rooms for 6 people).

They have provided me with following prices ( assuming everyone is a youth hostel member and more than 20 people join)

# 2 bed room : 58,70 francs per person/night

# 4 bed room with lavabo (showers on corridor): 41, 70 francs per person/night

In case you are not a member then please add 4 francs per person/night.

I propose to go skiing off-piste on saturday. Our guides, propose an off-piste unlimited ski day for CHF 80.- per person all inclusive avalanche transceiver, avalanche beacon training and a mountain guide.
Rather than getting started immediately, Swiss Alpine Guides explained that only typically 10% of people know what is a receiver, sender and how are things working, so they would like prior to skiing do a 1 hour exercise testing the equipment. If you have followed avalanche courses and/or other training and are familiar how these things work, then the training would not be mandatory.

Depending on how many people are interested, a beginner and a more intermediate/advanced group will be created. If interested, please transfer the money to my bank account by February 17 at the latest, when I need to confirm final numbers to them.

My bank account details are:

account number:[masked]A

BIC: UBSWCHZH80A

IBAN: CH[masked] 8940 A

Beneficiary: Patrick Wellens, 8006 Zurich

Bank: UBS

Kind regards

IMPORTANT

1. Please note that everyone is responsible for their own acts. It is up to each individual to take out appropriate insurance (off-piste, rescue, hospitality, third -party liability etc.) and by no means this organizer can be held responsible in any way for organizing this ski-weekend.

2. Refund policy is the same as always - in case you can-t make it, someone else can take over your spot - however I will not make refunds. This policy has been adopted several years ago after several people simply changed ideas (decided to no longer to an activity) and then requested a full refund.

3. As this is a group booking, and not an individual booking, if you have complaints/issues, please discuss these with me and do not start a discussion with the hostel since they do not know your individual situation and only now our group booking.

4. Given that this is a group booking and the number of males/females joining is unpredictable in the beginning and also the number and types of rooms changes constantly, I have tried to do my best to accommodate your wishes. Nevertheless it might be possible that not all your wishes (type of room) comes through. I am hoping that everybody is sufficiently flexible when joining groups and clearly does not see these groups as hotels with individualized service.

Thanks

Thanks Patrick! It was very pleasant like every time. This area is good for each level, and the evenings near the fire ideal to have some rest. Will miss the next week ends, so have fun everybody and see you soon!

Great weekend!! Some of us had their first time in a snowpark (ok, it was for kids, but anyway..!). Thanks Patrick for these good times! :)

While I skied sunday on kleine scheidegg area and left for the skibus when some of you were still getting their breakfast, and since some of you went to first/bort/oberjoch area, I have not been able to say proper goodbye. Hope everyone had a great snowy day and everyone made it safely home.

Hey you! Where are u guys? Had dinner and now want to have some fun somewhere? Shall we meet up somewhere... ;-)

    February 22, 2013

Due to the weather forecast, i do something else than skiing on Sunday. If anyone is up to sledging, please let me know :) Also cross-country skiing and skating are fine for me!

Hi all! I'm coming by car and I need to rent skis. Is anyone coming by train with Snow&Rail and not renting skis? I'd be willing to use the voucher to get 15% off at Intersport.

    February 22, 2013

    • Regina

Hi Cesar, I won't need my voucher. I'll give it to you tonight. Best, Regina

      February 22, 2013

  • Karime

Hello guys! Anyone aware if we should bring shower towels? See you tonight!

    February 22, 2013

    • Christine B

Hi Karime, I think you could rent one like in other youth hostels but not sure. Better bring one :-)

      February 22, 2013

    • Karime

Hi, there! Regina checked online, and it seems no towels, maybe they rent, but I will do as you: bring one. Thank you, Christine! :-)

Dear All, I have been contacted by additional people who would like to come. The hostel told me they are full however they can add beds in existing rooms (ie in 4 bed room). I have not been to this hostel yet, do not know the lay-out of the rooms and hence do not know whether adding an additional bed will or will not in any way impact existing comfort. I do not want to get into discussions again with some people who want to claim some money back because the room is not exactly what they paid (cfr Zermatt).

I can either deny people from coming altogether (full is full), or I can allow these people to come along (which is my preferred option). Hopefully everyone is OK with this. If you are not OK with this, please advise me in separate email ([masked]) - your response will be treated confidentially. Please respond however by thursday morning this week since need to finalize everything by the end of this week.

    Kind regards

Hi patrick, i have paid for 2 bed room. I am fine to be in a 4 bed one if needed, but 6 people is too much. Thanks.

      February 17, 2013

Not more than the 4 of us in ours, too much I guess!

Something came up so I would prefer to stay in Zurich on the weekend. Would anyone like to take my spot?

    February 17, 2013

    TRAIN SCHEDULE

The meetup group has been booked on following trains

Departure zurich HB 16.02 (platform 17) arrival Bern 16.58 - we have the second passenger coach/wagon from the front

Departure Bern 17.04 - arrival 17.57 Interlaken Ost- we have first passenger coach/wagon from the front

Departure Interlaken Ost 18.05 - arrival Grindelwald 18.39

As explained already I have made this booking for the group, but I will be taking an earlier train. Reservation has been made for 30plus people so please show up. If nobody takes this train, SBB with charge meet up/me 50 swiss francs which I obviously do not want to pay.

See you tomorrow eve in Grindelwald.

    February 21, 2013

  • Patrick

    OFF PISTE SKIING ONLY

They suggested that we rent a mountain guide for 650 francs/day for the intermediate/advanced group and a ski instructor for the beginner/intermediate group. Then total cost would be 650 francs plus 400 francs plus 15 francs rental by person/day which makes the cost by person going almost up to 140 francs/person.

    The options are :

    1) I do refund to all
    2) WE go for more expensive option
    3) We stick with the current Swiss Alpine Guide ( which is my preferred option and also from logistics point of view the easiest)

Is everyone fine with option 3? Please advise ASAP since need to finalize tonight the guide if we are going as planned.

    February 21, 2013

    • Mari

Hi, at least i dont want to take the option 2, because i dont see a point getting a guide for doing off-piste next to the piste. The weather forecast looks good, but i wonder if it is a good idea to "force" them to go. I guess they have a good reason if they dont want to have our money...

      February 21, 2013

    • Patrick

Rob pulled out and Christine is slightly hesitant, so suggest we try off-piste skiing another time. I will be trying some larger test skis for powder though this weekend, so hopefully I am able to still find some otherwise it was not a good investment.

      February 21, 2013

  • Patrick

    OFF PISTE SKKING ONLY

Swiss Alpine Guide would like to offer the experience of nice powder snow and they say that because of foggy weather and most tracks been skied they can-t provide us this experience and therefore they want to cancel this event. I have the strong impression that they do not really want to go. They said however that if we really want to go, they would do it. I have then called Swiss Ski School in Grindelwald and their technical dmountain guide states that it would be possible to go skiing off-piste this weekend. If you ski next to the slopes in off-piste snow then you can rent a ski instructor for about 400 francs/day for 4 people and 480 days for 8 people. I told them that I believe that in our group we probably have 4 people who are intermediate/advanced and 4 who are beginner/intermediate.

    February 21, 2013

  • Patrick

Upon check in your should receive a gastekarte B which allows access at reduced prices to the public swimming pool - Just in case the weather is really really bad and/or someone decides not to go skiing and/or enjoy outdoors.

The train for meetup has been reserved for 4.30 PM - I will not be on that train and I am planning to take one in the morning. See you friday evening.

With regards to dinner on friday evening the hostel proposes fish and on saturday alpmakrone. Price is CHF 16.50 each. As already mentioned the hostel likes to know how many people will join on friday and saturday night. For the moment I have booked the whole group on saturday and for friday evening I have booked everyone except the group from Marta, Maria B and Christina K. Let me know if these is incorrect, by replying to this message below - do not send me separate emails- before monday evening next week with the requested changes for friday and/or saturday.

IMPORTANT - I will pass the list of people and their food preferences to the hostel. This also means that you will personally be liable for settling this bill, independently whether you make it or not, whether you have a business meeting, whether you miss the train, whether you have read this message or not etc. As an organizer I mainly facilitate the communication, but have no liabilities with regards to dinner.

I will go by car on friday. Anyone want to join me?

    February 16, 2013

  • Patrick

The hostel contains 13 parking spaces (payable) and please note that last 100 meters snow-chains are mandatory. I have no idea whether the hostel contains wifi.

I will settle with the hostel the accommodation. Parking spots, drinks, snacks, dinner etc. need to be settled directly with the hostel so for whatever you write on tabs or consumer, please make sure that all consumptions are settled prior to check-out since we do not want to leave a bad impression.

Check in is possible from 4pm onwards , if you come earlier there are lockers in the basement.

I have provided a room list to the hostel so independently of when you come, you should be able to find your room.

It is a 15 minute walk to the hostel, with a steep climb at the end (or take the bus).

    Dear All,

Just spoke to hostel - with regards to friday, the dinner is a fish menu If anyone needs a veggie menu, please advise ASAP. With regards to saturday, we can either go in the city somewhere (although it will be hard to find a place with 40 people) or we can eat in the hostel. In case we eat in the hostel, I need to make a reservation by tuesday at the latest, so please advise.

They told me that they have sensational snow - and more snow is expected tonight.

    February 14, 2013

    • Mari

Either way is fine with me, eating in the hostel would be easier.

      February 14, 2013

      February 15, 2013

With regards to dinner on friday evening (and also on saturday evening) this is not included in the price, so this means that everyone who says they will come for dinner will be charged accordingly. So far I have noted down that Marta and group, Christina K and Maria B will not make it on time to join for dinner. For all others I have confimed dinner, if not correct - please advise ASAP.

Some apres -ski info (taken from local website - not my personal experience - I typically go to bed at 10 pm))--

The American Bar is good for cold beers and US style fast food. It also has pool tables, video gaming machines and a darts board with a loud soundtrack of pop hits. The Challi-Bar in the Hotel Kreuz and Post often has live bands or a DJ to create a convivial atmosphere, and the signature Challi cocktail is always a highlight after a day on the slopes.

The cool Mescalero disco and the Plaza nightclub in the Sunstar Hotel both offer late night dancing through to 3am.

IMPORTANT-Please respond by January 30 at the latest whether you will take the 4.02 PM train and/or later train. In case no response has been received, I will assume no dinner is needed and a later train will be taken (would still be great to know what will be the estimated time of arrival).

@ Unofrtunately in Zermatt, there was a technical difficult to trains and not everyone was able to make it on. At the reception of the hostel all keys were handed in to me, and I was told that I deal with the calls in the middle of the night when people arrive. Luckily this horror scenario did not materialize fully since everyone made it to the hostel about 11.30 pm.

Hopefully this does not happen in Grindelwald, but I think it would be a good idea to have phone numbers exchanged with everyone so that in case anyone needs to be reached, it can be done so. If for privacy reasons you do not want to do so, I understand.

Dear All, Dinner is served between 6.30 PM and 7.30 PM. If we take train at 4.32PM then we arrive at 7.09 PM and from station to hotel is about 15- 20 minutes by foot, walking upwards on the street. If we take a train after 4.32 PM i.e. 5.02 pM then we arrive at 7.39PM and after walking towards the hotel, you will arrive at 8pM in hotel. The hotel mentioned already that this is too late.

Is the 4.32 PM train departing zurich HB OK for everyone or do you prefer 5.02 PM or later train? Please advise.
