Weekend Skiing in Zermatt

  • Jan 18, 2013 · 5:15 PM

Dear All,

The idea would be to go skiing for a weekend in Zermatt. Zermatt is one of the most well-known resorts with enough slopes for beginners, intermediate and advanced skiers. Skiing with a view on the Matterhorn and enjoying one or more slopes running into Italy is a joy for every skier.

Given that Zermatt is highly sought after and it is difficult to find accommodation for larger groups, I have opted again to go back to the youth hostel where we stayed last year. I have taken an option for 20 spots which I need to confirm by October 7.

The prices at the hostel are:

* double room with sanitary unit : 89 francs

* 4 bed room with washbasin (showers are on the corridor): 60 francs

Prices are by person by night and include accommodation, breakfast, dinner and visitor tax.

The above prices apply if 20 or more people sign up and relate to members of youth hostel. If you are not a member, please add 3 francs per night.

Please note that I have been given an option till October 7. For those interested may I ask you to transfer the respective amount of money by October 6 on my bank account (please do not transfer money to me on October 6 in the evening since highly likely I will not receive it before October 8, which is too late). As you will understand, with every contract their are rights and obligations and hence I am not signing any contracts and become liable for 20 spots if there is no interest from the group.

If there is more interest, obviously I can ask for more spots which at this point in time is still possible. So in order to confirm our booking and reserve our group space, I kindly ask you to transfer money before October 6.

The idea is to take a train on Friday evening (5pm or 5.30 pm) and take the train back on sunday late afternoon (4.30 pm).

Looking forward to great skiing,

@ Dahlia and Indre, I do not know exactly whom to which spot but my understanding is that Dahlia took the spot from Maria Cristina. Can you please get into contact with Maria Cristina regarding payment to her. I am getting very annoying messages from Maria Cristina for an issue which I am only the intermittent. Please give this high priority and solve immediately. Thanks for keeping me posted.

BTW: In case you want to check which slopes you skied and how many vertical meters you made last weekend, you can find out on skiline.cc website.
The only information you need is to have the ski pass number, which is printed on the plastic card or on the receipt.
Zermatt and some other skiing ressorts are connected to this website. Unfortunately the ticket office doesn't let you know that you can access the valuable data. But you can ask them to write down the number before returning your ticket. So in case you didn't return your ticket yesterday, you can still access the information.

    FOR OFF-PISTE ONLY

Just spoke to the guide. Depending on weather, wind etc. (currently it is sunshine in Zermatt) we will go to Gornergrat or Trockener Stegg. Anyhow the idea is to meet at the latest at Kleine Matterhorn cable car (furi) at 8.20 am.
As the guide correctly said, from 8 -8.15 am onwards when the ticket offices open, there is usually a long queue. We do not want to stand 20 minutes in the queue so I strongly suggest that you buy your tickets on-line, because with the snow-rail ticket we have to stand in the queue which is annoying.

From last year I remember that breakfast is being served from 7.30 am onwards. My suggestion therefore is that we meet at the hotel reception at 8.00 AM and then walk 10 to 15 minutes towards the Kleine Matterhorn cable car (i.e. go down the street till T split and then turn left, go straight till you arrive at lift).

    FOR OFF-PISTE SKIING ONLY

We have Tom, Annette, Anke, Danielle, Riita, Valerie, Beatrice, Hugo, Phil and Patrick registered. I will know Friday evening what time and where we will meet on saturday morning. I will leave a message at the reception regarding time when we depart, so please when checking in the hotel on friday evening, please inform yourself about this. Please do not send me sms asking to call you since friday night I will be in a bar/pub and might not see your sms immediately. Only in case of urgency call me 079/9062857.

Since we are with a group, please be on time since we can-t have 10 people waiting for you. Suggest that you come 10 minutes earlier and then check if you have everything so that we can all go on time towards the meeting point.

Just to make sure that we avoid any misunderstanding, if we say that we will leave at e.g. 8 am this means that we are ready to go at 8am, i.e. not starting to get your skis, get in your boots etc. by 8 am.

    January 15, 2013

David P - have you signed up for the off piste by now? If not, would you like to take my place. Just let me know.

Went on an Avalanche course last weekend. Plenty of deep powder, pretty cool! Except I see my piste skill doesn't really translate to powder. :P

If there are still two groups (I assume?), I guess we'll figure out groups in Zermatt - but I'm pretty sure that I don't belong in an "advanced" group. ;)

I advised hostel that approx. 35 people will take dinner. This is based on feedback received till january 10. As I wrote in my message, if I have not heard from you by then I assume you organize your own dinner. Thx.

    FOR OFF-PISTE ONLY

Sorry for being Swiss/German. PLease please be on time or even better come 5 minutes earlier. If one person is not on time then the whole group has to wait and in the meanwhile the whole queue at the ticket counter AND lift gets longer, since most people like to start early. Thanks for your understanding.

PS- Since I do not have all the phone numbers of everyone in the off-piste group, I can not call you asking where you are.

    January 17, 2013

  • Mackinga

    Hi Patrick
I would join the off pist beginner class, if its still an option and easy to organise. Thanks

    January 16, 2013

  • Patrick

For those who are NOT familiar with the youth hostel - the reception of the hostel is open from 7.30 till 10 AM and from 4pm onwards, so if you arrive during the day before 4pm there will not be anyone to take your backpack/luggage etc. I thought I mention this since several people seems to be coming during the day.

    January 15, 2013

      January 15, 2013

  • Patrick

There is only 1 youth hostel in Zermatt. Upon arrival in Zermatt by train, there are basically two ways to get to hostel. You either take a private taxi (I believe up to 4 people can get into it) and think costs 30 francs (i.e. 8 francs by person) or you walk 10 to 15 minutes. From the station, follow the main street till the church, right before church turn left, cross the bridge and take the second street to the right. You follow this street for 150 meters, then the street will start going uphill. On your left you will see about 20 stairs to go up and then you arrived at hostel.

    Dear All,

I have booked the 6.02 PM train arriving visp 20.02, departure visp 20.10 arrival zermatt at 21.13 for 50 people. So you will be in hostel at 21.30 PM. Personally I am planning to take an early morning train and try to go skiing on friday already.

The hostel informed me that dinner is served till 19.30 PM, potentially they could do till 20.00 PM however later is not possible so suggest you either eat in Zermatt or eat on the train. Obviously will provide you refund for dinner not taken.

The person who has Zahia-s racing snowboard, could you please contact her, since she recently wrote me a message asking for it. I am not sure who has it.

    January 14, 2013

    • Patrick

Riitta, you are more than welcome to attend. Just that you know - the prices given for off-piste ski class (incl. monitors meal, equipment rental etc.) work if you effectively have 5 or 6 people (which I was hoping) per group for two groups. If you have 8 or 9 people ( 2 ski monitors), then the second group with 2 or 3 people is not self-supporting. Tom is more than welcome to attend, but I can-t swap your place by him and have him reimburse you since this is the same as a paying the money back. Sorry for any inconvenience caused and/or the direct/blunt communication style but hopefully this makes things clear.

    Dear All,

I wish you great year-end 2012, excellent 2013 with lots of fun, skiing etc.

Possibly I might go skiing already in Zermatt on January 18 in the morning, will nevertheless organize space on the train for the group. Although I provided all names to the hostel and allocated people to rooms (hence no problems should be expected), it would be great to know:

    a) whether people come by train/car, what time they will arrive (or what train they will take etc.)

    b) I want to make sure that I am at reception/available for those arriving, but as you can imagine with over 50 people, I will not be standing several hours at reception and will also enjoy my dinner so some planning is needed, hence would appreciate if I can advise the hostel on a consolidated basis when people will arrive.

Thanks for replying on a) by January 10 at the latest.

I will come by train and expect to arrive at the hotel some time between 20:00 and 21:30

I will also take the train from 18.02 cheers

@ Nina/Bea, looking forward to see you again.

@ Philippe, Ivo - I do not have any more places available for male participants unless some male participant decides not to come anymore.

@ 1 hay 2 more female spot available. Christina R wrote me a message that she cant make it in December, afterwards Joyce and Deidre gave up their spots as well. I think Dahlia reimbursed Joyce and Helen got reimbursed by Indre, so the spot from Christina R is still available. Also Rachel S now longer can make it. @ Rachel/Christina, please advise whether Christina took your spot and/or whether this spot is up for grabs.

80 cm snow on bottom , 225 cm on top of the mountain at 2900 meters. Some big dumps of snow are needed in the next days so that we will have fresh snow to ski on the next weekend.
