Weekend Skiing in Verbier

  • February 1, 2013 · 7:00 PM

Dear All,

The idea would to go skiing for the weekend in Verbier, truly one of the best skiing areas in Switzerland.

There are sufficient slopes for beginners, intermediate and advanced skiers (see picture below).

We would be staying at a mountain hut at 2500 meters altitude (see picture attached) which allows to sit down on the terrasse till 5.30 or 6pm with a glass of wine and have great views of the sun going down as well as sunrise in the morning.

Please note that in the immediate vicinity there is nothing else than snow, i.e. no bars, no discos, supermarkets or Mc Donalds. We are in the mountains here. The closest hut/restaurant is a 15 minute walk, approx. 200 meters down. It is a unique experience to stay overnight at a mountain hut. Given that it is that high in the mountains, it means that you can sleep out. The ski station is Verbier opens around 9am and the big chair lift going up to the top of the mountain opens at 9.15 am. From our hut, we put on the skis and in 5 minutes we are at entrance of Mont Fort skiing area.

There are rooms for 2 persons, 4 persons and larger rooms so in principle there is something for everyone.

I like to secure some places for our group and as always in Switzerland they prefer a coordinated group booking rather than getting phone calls from lots of individuals. Although there are no specific dates by when I need to make a booking, clearly the hut is sought after by various groups and hence when other groups makes bookings and the hut gets fuller, the flexibility I have to add on additional spots becomes limited. Therefore I strongly suggest that in case you are interested you secure your spot, make a payment and if it turns out later that you can-t make it, there will highly likely be other people taking over your spot and/or I can discuss refund with the owner.

Prices are 60 swiss francs per person/night and include accommodation and breakfast. Dinner can be paid separately.

Bank: UBS

IMPORTANT : The mountain hut can be reached by either taking the big cable car (Montfort) and then ski down for about 10 minutes for an average skier or you can walk by foot to the hut for about 20 minutes. In case you want to take the cable car, then probably the last cable car goes somewhere around 4pm or 4.15 pm.

Given that it takes from Zurich to Verbier  approx. 3,5 to 4 hours to get there, you either need to leave friday at lunch time, take all friday off or you take the very early train at 6am which will get at the bottom of the verbier valley around 10am and at the slopes around 10.30 am.

Please note on your booking whether you will join for friday evening only, saturday evening only or friday and saturday evening. With regards to transportation, please advise whether you will take a train on friday morning early hours, friday afternoon or saturday early hours so that I can advise SBB accordingly.

Looking forward to another great weekend of skiing.

Please note that everyone is responsible for their own acts. It is up to each individual to take out appropriate insurance (off-piste, rescue, hospitality, third -party liability etc.) and by no means this organizer can be held responsible in any way for organizing this ski-weekend.

Latest weather forecast (for next 3 days) - 5 cm snow on friday morning and 6 cm on friday afternoon. Another 13 cm expected for friday night, so saturday morning should be... excellent.

Good morning! Is there anyone working on Friday and leaving to Verbier in the afternoon? I am not sure how to get to the hut yet...

    January 31, 2013

Check my post from a couple days ago. It looks as though you'll have to leave HB at noon.

      January 31, 2013

Hi Patrick, the second person told me this afternoon he cannot make it either.

    January 30, 2013

To off piste skiers (even not ski touring or "real" free riders): avalanches are crazy this year. Even if you stay close to the slope ALWAYS wear you avalanche gear (a transceiver aka PIPS, not the RECO in your cloths as it stays for recovery, not rescue). Even if you cannot use it for rescuing others, if you cannot probe, having a transceiver is significantly increasing your chances of being found.

Ok, unfortunately I definitely cannot come now :-( so if any female wants the space you can have it. If you want just one night only then that's fine too, I've paid anyway so somebody might as well have the bed. Have a fantastic weekend everybody!

    January 30, 2013

  • Draco S.

I will be leaving on an early am train from Neuchatel will likely join on the train as it likely passes through here if not then where can I meet up with those going Friday morning?

    January 30, 2013

  • Tatiana K.

Who is going on the afternoon? when is the lastest options? I am not really clear with how to get there.

    January 30, 2013

  • Patrick

    To bring along :

    * towels
( showers with hot water can be taken but with the hotel warden tokens need to be obtained for 4 or 5 francs ( do not know exact amount)
    * cash money (for dinner, drinks and meals)
    * smile
    * good physical shape to go over the bumps above (smile)
    * camera

Although this is self-explanatory - Everyone is responsible for settling their drinks, meals (dinner and lunches) directly with the hotel warden. In order to allow us to return to this hut on other occasions, please pay all dues and do not leave amounts open on tab (as this happened in other places). See you on Friday night

  • Damla

Hi Patrick, the nominee for Murray`s spot is not coming. I am waiting for a response from the other colleague for the other spot.

    January 29, 2013

    • Cesar

Hello Damla & Patrick. I would be keen to take Murray's spot if it's still available but only for Saturday night (I would take the early train option on Saturday). If that's possible, please let me know whom I should send the money to.

      January 29, 2013

    • Patrick

@ Damla, since I have not heard from you, I assume there is no interest from the second person either.

      January 29, 2013

  • Holgi

Hi Patrick, Luke. I have booked my Snow'n Rail Ticket and meet you on Friday on Gleis 17 for the train leaving at 6:02. Is there anybody else taking this train? The Snow' Rail comes with 2 skipasses so will need a third one -therefore obviously receptive for the Tom's special offer. However, I can understand that 7 divided by 45 is a difficult one... See u all on Friday!

    1 · January 29, 2013

  • Damla

Dear Patrick and Murray, I have 2 collegues (male) interested in coming. One for Brad`s place, the other for Murray`s. Is it still possible? If yes, I will try to get their confirmation today.

    January 29, 2013

    • Patrick

Since cancellations should be taken in a first come, first serve way - the first person spot which should be taken is Ivo. Then it seems that Murray was the next person who cancelled. As an exception, I will allow these changes to go thru, but after this I do not make any changes anymore. Changing the number of people coming and changing room allocations drives hotel warden and youth hostels nuts and does not look good on us. Thx for understanding.

      January 29, 2013

    • Patrick

@ Damla, please advise ASAP whether your two colleagues will take the spot of Ivo and if positive, please transfer money today so that it is tomorrow on my bank account.

  • Patrick

For those who want to walk to the hut, when standing in front of the Montfort 1 cable car, there is a path (which is also the ski-piste) going up to hut. It will take you 15 to 20 minutes from Montfort 1 to arrive at the hut. You can of course rent skis on saturday morning, but most rental ski shops are situated in the center of VERBIER which means that you need to walk back by foot to lifts, take cable cars down to les ruinnettes and then further to verbier and then come up all the way again, which I reckon takes you at least 1 hour or more.
In my opinion a better option is when arriving at le chable, and taking cable car/gondola up, make a stop in verbier city center, rent your skis and then get back on the chairlift and continue towards the hut.

    January 28, 2013

    • Damla

Hi, Brad just told me he won`t be able to make it. If you are male &v interested in coming, please inform Brad ([masked]) and Patrick.

Thanks, Adam, for that very important info! At this point, my plan is to leave Zurich at around noon as well. Has anyone investigated alternative transporation options to La Chaux VS for latecomers?

Unfortunately I can't make this weekend because of work, if anybody wants to take my place just let me (and Patrick) know.

Hi, I might have a problem for next weekend, but this is not yet confirmed, so, if there's a female on the waiting list who wants my place and can definitely go then let me know (or a male but we MUST confirm this with Patrick before tonight for the room allocation). Otherwise I'll just leave it as it is and hope I can go.
