Christmas skiing/riding in Andermatt

In decidedly non-Swiss fashion I propose a last minute trip to Andermatt. Per http://www.j2ski.com/snow_forecast/Switzerland/ it has the deepest snow in Switzerland at the moment. I've found a hostel (www.basecamp-andermatt.com) that will charge us about CHF 45 per night per person with rooms for 4, 5, and 6 people. It's about 100m from the nearest ski lift. They have free WiFi and a kitchen we can use.

We'll each send payment directly to the hostel. Once I know about how many people are interested I'll post details. If you prefer to join the group for a shorter period it should not be a problem.

If you're arriving tonight please bring some hangers with you. We're a little short of storage space, but there is plenty of space to hang up clothes.

    1. It seems that it is not possible to buy a 2 day "Snow'n'Rail" ticket unless one is taking a trip of two days, or perhaps three days.

    2. Ben and I bought lift tickets for the "Surselva" region. In addition to the lifts covered by an Andermatt pass it covers some others, including (we think) Disentis. It costs about 10% more than a regular ticket. We're still not committed to going to Disentis.

    To reach the hostel:

Exit the turnstile at the train station and turn left.
When you reach the main road turn left.
Cross the railroad tracks and turn right shortly thereafter.
At the fork bear left (the Notspital is on the right.)
Head up the ski slope to the Nätschen Chairlift -- you can recognize it by the red sign with messages, which runs all night.
When you reach the lift turn right and head up the ski piste.
You will see the lodge ahead of you, on the right side of the piste. It's the house with some lights on. When you pull level with it you'll see a path to the door.

If you have heavy luggage you can leave it at the bottom of the road and come back for it using a motorized transporter.

The Coop will be open until 5pm Sunday, 4pm Monday, closed Tuesday (Christmas Day), and until 6pm or so Wednesday, but we'll be on our way out of town by then.

Conditions were perfect in the morning. Clouds in the afternoon mean less visibility, but the snow is still good.

Adam - might be a bit late to ask but will you plan on getting a mountain guide to go off-piste? Or is the idea to stay on piste? With so much snow, would be hard to stay on the resort only...

    December 20, 2012

    • Adam W.

Had not planned on a guide it but if anyone wants to I'll be happy to share the cost.

Nice to hear from you Inese! Where will you be staying? Will you ski at all? You are always welcome to join us on the slopes or afterwards.

Someone emailed me a question about dining. I've never been to Andermatt, so I plan to play it by ear. Presumably we'll have lunch on the slopes, so that leaves breakfast and dinner. We'll have a kitchen, so we have options. We are staying close to the village, which contains shops and restaurants. We might want to plan to buy something for breakfast on Friday after we arrive. I'll see if I can find out how late the stores are open. If they are not open late enough anyone who wants to can pick something up at the Migros at HB.

There is a pool in Sedrun if anyone wants to swim at the end of the day. The train ride is included in our lift ticket.

Just checked the report again. Still looks good! I should have mentioned that that report was for the mid-mountain. It will be a couple degrees colder at the top.

    Hi Adam,

is the plan still the same with regards where you will be skiing on saturday, sunday? Might also be a good idea to post a day in advance what ski area you will be covering the next day so that people can join.

    December 19, 2012

    • Adam W.

Still the same plan, Nätschen Saturday and Gemsstock Sunday. I'll try to remember to post regarding the weekdays once we decide. Anyone who wants can always contact be by email or mobile --[masked]

I found the exact rates, per Lars: 37CHF during the week and 47CHF at weekends and holidays or events. 24th is xmas eve, 25th first xmas day and 26th second xmas day. All public holidays in canton Uri. So we'll each be paying CHF 47 per night except for Friday night.

Lars at Basecamp has asked that you communicate through me rather than contacting the hostel directly. All the spots below are reserved for us so there's no need to make a deposit if you haven't already.

  • Adam W.

I should have been more clear! I have reserved spots for everyone who has RSVP'd.

Adam, I am still not sure. If booking is binding please give my spot to someone sure. Thanks!

Not binding on you, Lav. Please let me know when you are certain one way or another. I hope you can make it!

Hi Adam, did you reserve spots for those of us who signed up, or should we reserve ourselves? Thanks!

      December 18, 2012

    Hi Adam,

I certainly will not join for the full weekend since have some private commitments. Possibly I join you for either saturday or sunday. Would you mind letting me know where you plan going skiing on saturday and sunday. The gems stock is the most popular ski area, however it has black runs, deep powder and hence not for everyone.

    December 12, 2012

    • Adam W.

If you have no preference we'll ski Nätschen Saturday and Gemsstock Sunday, then decide for the other days based on which we liked best. During the week we might consider a field trip to Disentis, an hour away by train.

      December 16, 2012

    • Adam W.

Or Sedrun during the week... I see from this article that it's 20 minutes by train and included in the area lift ticket: http://www.telegraph....

I just got around to checking one of my favorite sites and learned that at the moment Andermatt is #3 for snow depth *worldwide*. On-piste conditions are described as "excellent".

Hi Adam, I may be interested in joining from the 23rd or 24th until the 26th, although I'm just an intermediate skier.

    December 14, 2012

    • Adam W.

Everyone is welcome. It's not an "experts only" trip. If it were I might not be allowed! Depending on how many of us there are we may split up into faster and slower groups.

      December 14, 2012

  • Adam W.

I just checked lift ticket prices. A five day pass is CHF 225. The best deal is probably a Snow'n'Ride with a two day lift ticket, plus a three day ticket for CHF 145. http://www.andermatt.ch/de/bergbahnen/mehrtagesabos-m451/
