Mountain hike to the Säntis

We start the hike at the Schwägalp bus station, 1352m, and finish at the restaurant at the top of the Säntis, 2502m. We take the cable car down.

Timetable for those coming from the Zurich main station:

Meet at the start of platform 11 at 8:00 at the very latest.

Arrive          Depart
                     8:09              Zurich
9:06             9:22              Gossau
9:44             9:50              Urnäsch
10:12                                   Schwägalp

The train / bus / cable car tickets should be valid as follows:
Outward journey: Zurich – Schwägalp
Return journey: Säntis – Zurich

Important: The organiser is not responsible for any bodily injury or other accidents that might happen during the hike. By signing up on this activity, the participants agree that the organiser will not be held responsible in any way. It is each individual's responsibility to check out the trail and to ensure that he/she can do the hike.

Our hiking route will be Schwägalp – Tierwis – Säntis. At Tierwis, 2085m, there is a basic rustic restaurant, which appears to be there for hikers only.

This trail is designated by the Swiss Hiking Federation as a "mountain hiking trail". The advice given by the Swiss Hiking Federation for such a trail is as follows (quotation taken from the map):

"Users must be sure-footed, have a good head for heights, be in good physical condition and have mountain experience. Shoes must be solid and slip-resistant."

Cancellation: Adverse weather conditions can make a mountain hike very dangerous, and the weather forecast can be changing all the time. So a cancellation even at very short notice is possible.

Hi everybody, since posting this event I found out by chance that the Schwägalp Schwingfest will be taking place on that day. This means that Schwägalp will be very crowded, but the path up and the restaurant at Tierwis should be the same as on any other day. The restaurant at the top is always well used on a Sunday, I've heard. In fact, this event could make things easier for us regarding the bus (Postauto) from Urnäsch to Schwägalp, because they should be providing extra busses. (I spoke to a lady from Postauto on the phone, she reckoned that they would be providing extra busses, but wasn't sure!) Anyway, at this point in time I have reserved 30 places on a bus from Urnäsch to Schwägalp. I haven't made a reservation for the bus journey back, because I don't know when we'll be back at Schwägalp, and I'm assuming that there will be extra busses.

If there were any extra buses, you would see them scheduled on the sbb official website. http://fahrplan.sbb.c... are none of them, as far as I can see. Last one is at 18.33 from Schwaegalp.

The lady from Postauto mailed me a timetable. There's a bus from Schwägalp to Urnäsch every hour until 19:15. The SBB timetable has not been updated owing to the Schwingfest. Another person in Schwägalp, who was there last year during the Schwingfest, has told me that the busses were going back and forth all the time. Anyway, as mentioned, do bring some extra cash for a taxi, just in case, one never knows.

Yes. Please go exactly to the place where the busses drop us off. Sorry I'm replying just now - was out all day.

To Dan and Hubert: I can't really say anything specific about helping you to find us except that I'll be wearing a blue checked shirt! I think you'll have hardly any difficulty spotting us.

Regarding the bus journey back in the afternoon Postauto has informed me that there are extra busses and that nobody will be left behind! Anyway, best to have some spare cash for a taxi just in case ...

  • Tony

Hi everybody, if there is a change in your decision please update your RSVP by tomorrow (Friday) morning at the latest, so that I can send a mail to Postauto updating the reservation on the bus from Urnäsch to Schwägalp. Their office is not open on Saturday. Also, this will enable people on the waiting list to move up immediately.

Thank you for organizing this hike, Tony - much appreciated. Since I've done Säntis several times (beautiful!) and I've found another Sunday hike I can attend, I've changed my RSVP to no. I'm looking forward to attending another of your hikes another time. Susanne.
