"Accessibility is a Feature You Can Build" + 2 special guest speakers.

Let's talk development! For the meet up this month, Monika Piotrowicz will speak a about the accessibility challenges she's faced as a front-end developer.

Accessibility is a Feature You Can Build - A Guided Tour of a11y Basics

Making a website or application accessible can be an overwhelming task for a lot of developers, especially if you’re not already an expert. In this talk, I’ll walk through some of the fundamentals I learned when working through accessibility requirements for the first time. From design considerations, writing friendly HTML and JS, to an introduction to ARIA, I hope to leave attendees with a starting point of how to make their next project more accessible for all.

About our speaker:  Monika is a front end developer from Toronto, currently working at Shopify.

UPDATE: We've added a second talk!

Old Habits Die Hard: Change Management in Social Media And Its Implications For Users With Motor Impairments

Dr. Makayla Lewis has graciously accepted our offer to present last minute. Makayla is in town this week for a conference so we're incredibly excited that she agreed to a last minute talk. Makayla is visiting Toronto from London, England where, in addition to her work at the University of London, she runs a11yLDN.

We've upped the capacity for this meet up to allow for added interest and any out of town guests we might need to accommodate.

UPDATE: We've added a third talk!

Able Player: A fully accessible cross-browser media player

Join us as Terrill Thompson, who is visiting from the University of Washington, gives a demonstration of Able Player and discusses some of the decisions that were made during it's development.

Able Player is an open source project and is available on GitHub. For full documentation or to download the player, check out Able Player on GitHub.

Last night was my first time out to an event. The speakers were great and I went home with boatloads of new knowledge and things to think about. Any idea where Monika's slides will be available for download?

2 people forgot their notebooks last night. Small red & larger black. They can be picked up at Devlin & are on the ladybug shelf in the bookcases in the front of the room.
