  • Meet at the Smokemont Campground
  •

    THURSDAY:
Carpool from the Ann Arbor area. Set up camp at the Smokemont area campsite. There's 6 people max per campsite, 6 tents max per campsite. Two cars per campsite.  Bring $15.00 to cover camping fees. Smokemont Campground has flush toilets, drinking water and sinks. There are two sites reserved. Please confirm your RSVP to keep your spot.

Bring your own food, water and basic toiletries. People are usually happy to share, but it's good to have what make you happy. We may be able to share a cooking stove to heat up water and share some dinner.

    Friday:
Head down the road 30 minutes for a day hike around the Deep Creek Loop:
    http://www.hikinginthesmokys.com/deepcreek.htm

    Saturday:
Head the other way on the road to Clingman's Dome. We'll take a short but steep walk up to the observation tower. At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest peak in the Smokies and the third highest mountain east of the Mississippi. On clear days the observation tower on the summit of the mountain offers spectacular 360° views of the Smokies and beyond.

Afterwards, check out the trails in the Smokemont area and go horseback riding.
    For riding: http://www.smokemontridingstable.com/

    Sunday:
Pack up camp, clean up and head into Gatlinburg to walk around, shop and scare the locals with our scruffy appearance.

    Check out the Smokies:

I sent an email previously asking for e-mail confirmations from people for this trip. So far, I know that myself, Dylan, Magda, Jessie and Michael K are coming. Matthew is a maybe. Please e-mail your confirmation for this trip to: [masked] by 1:00 pm on Friday. After that I will adjust our reservation according to the confirmations.

See, I had to put up my own money to reserve this trip, and I don't want to have to pay for campsites that will not be filled. Thanks for your understanding.

Is it okay to bring two Labrador retrievers?

This is not a pet friendly trip. Restrictions on pets are strict in both the Federal and State forests.

I'm trying to look up hiking paths in smoky mountains, and it seems most are in the smoky mountain national park, so if that's closed it won't be as nice.

It seems quite ridiculous to me that a government shutdown should prevent me from walking on hills and trails. The mountains and trails will still be there without the government. It's just because they won't be paying some park ranger to officially open the park where the trails are at. But there are also paths not in parks, if I remember. But the campsite would be an issue.

OK...so it is possible we will need a Plan B if the National Parks do not re-open in time.
South Cumberland State Park in Tennessee. It is in the same area, also has waterfalls, camping, creeks. A very nice trip.

When I was a kid, we used to vacation in the Smokeys almost every year. We stayed either at this place in Townsend, TN: http://www.townsendgatewayinn.c...
or the next hotel within walking distance just to the east.
It was called the Wears Motel back then.
That was almost 30 years ago, and things have changed a lot.

What time do you think we'll be back in Ann Arbor on Sunday? I'm trying to get someone to cover my work shift from 6-9pm, but if we'll be back by then I won't stress over it.

Hi Jordan, there may be some delays along the way that we can't plan for. It is an 8-9 hour trip. It would be better to get someone to cover your shift.

Where are we car pooling from

    September 12, 2013

There is an MDOT Parking lot on Plymouth Road, right by US 23 in Ann Arbor. That seems like a good location.

You can't leave cars there overnight. Will have to find out who is driving and see if they have places to meet and park.
