xc skiing - beginners welcome

All are welcome. I can show you the basic kick and glide and what to do with your poles. Also watch this video:

We'll park at Matthaei Botanical Gardens (small parking fee) and ski a few miles south to Radrick Farms golf course. We can ski around the course and there's also a network of trails in the woods.

This is not downhill skiing. If you encounter a hill that's too steep, simply pop off your skis and walk that section.

Please allow yourself time to rent equipment in the morning (or Friday evening). In Ann Arbor you can rent skis, boots and poles from Bivouac, Sun & Snow, REI or UoM Rec Sports. Most places open at 10:00 am and charge $10-15. REI is higher but they rent for the whole weekend. Check out the conservatory if you arrive early!

We'll ski for about 3 hours. Be sure to dress warmly. You should have water, a hat, thick socks and heavy gloves or mittens. I'll stay with the slower skiers. If you might go up ahead, be sure to have my cell # so we can reconvene or in case you get lost.

Afterward, we'll warm up with chili and beer at Sidetrack in Depot Town (56 E Cross St, Ypsilanti, MI).

The roads are looking pretty bad with all of this snow. I think I'm going to have to drop out this time around - bummer! Hopefully I will be able to make it next time.

Would love to join the group but I don't want to drive snowy roads any more than I have to this winter.

It looks like the snow will stick around for a while. We could of course not have chili and beer at Sidetrack after skiing, but then it wouldn't be the same event I always copy from Carol because it was my first meetup a few years ago.
