Paddle Practice (kayaking) on the Huron River

I am in the process of preparing for the Maumee Valley Tri-Adventure Race.  To that end I am attempting to get on the water at least twice a week (at most every other day) for about 1 to 2 hour paddle excursions.

Rather than posting each individual event I am experimenting with this extended day format.  So please don't be confused about this being a multiple day trip.
What I hope to do is have people interested in participating to RSVP to this event then I can send you individual e-mail with specifics for each paddle excursion.

The Huron River is flowing very high right now and is very cold (much colder than summer time).  Both of these increase the element of danger, so these paddle excursions are not for first time paddlers (first timers should wait for safer conditions in the summer).  I can adjust the intensity/difficulty level of the excursion by the selection of the put-in location.  So please be honest when I inquire about your paddle experience and comfort level on the water, otherwise you may find yourself on a stretch of river that is beyond your current skill level.

These paddles are intended to be more about the training than the socializing, but if I wasn't looking for someone to share the adventure with I wouldn't be posting these events here.  I try to have each excursion last no longer than 2 to 3 hours (get in and get out quickly), and part of this is achieved by not messing around with shuttling and dropping off cars along the river.  We will put in and either paddle upstream immediately or paddle downstream with the knowledge we will have to paddle back upstream to get back to the vehicle.

RSVP if you are interested and I will contact you via e-mail with more details.

I was at the Gallup Park dock where they rent the boats at 2:40. I waited until 3:20, but no one arrived. Did this event happen, or was I in the wrong place? I did launch my boat and kayak on my own.

We passed the dock and paddle toward Argo pond and did not see any kayaker or canoe around 3:30 pm.

Hey Jim. Sorry we missed you. We launched from the boat launch not the rental dock. Boat launch is east of Huron Prkwy on Geddes. We did have a little delay in getting on the water as I was giving Connie tips on getting in and out of the boat...and I had to go back at one point to make sure I locked the car doors, but we did paddle by the rental place and headed up stream. We didn't see anyone on the water.

The rain held off. The water was flowing high relative to summer though about a foot lower than Friday morning, but still was really cold. Connie totally rocked the paddling.

Yes I looked today and there was no life at the livery. That is good news they will be open next weekend. Are they only open for weekends in April, or through the week as well?

I am still planning on being at the Gallup Pond dock at 3pm on Sunday unless it is raining hard or storming. I still haven't figured out how to read the RSVP question responses so I don't know how many of you have your own boat(s). I don't think the livery is open yet, so you have to arrange to bring or share your own boat.

I am very interested in kayaking with you guys, but I have a whitewater kayak and not sure about paddling upstream. I would never keep up with the longer type boat.

I need to change the paddle time this weekend from Sat. to Sunday afternoon looking more like 3pm at this time.

I am new to this organizer thing and haven't figured out how to access the RSVP question results for everyone. Unfortunately the liveries are currently not open so if you don't have your own boat you won't be able join in this morning. This morning I plan to drop in at the Gallup Pond boat launch which is just east of Huron River drive. This should be a fairly easy paddle.
