4th Annual Memorial Weekend Whitewater Rafting Trip!!

Moved this to the top: In order to go on this trip you must call (800)[masked] and add on to our group (Rocco, reservation # 29892, you'll need to pay the $142.80 at that time). We'll arrange carpooling when it gets closer and depending on when people will be arriving. We can also co-ordinate food so that we can cook as a group Friday and Saturday nights. Please contact me with any questions. Hope you can come!

It's that time of year again! I apologize for not posting this sooner but life has been hectic to say the least. If you aren't busy Memorial Day weekend, I strongly encourage you to join us on this trip, it's a blast every year!

The Lower New River Gorge is commonly referred to as ‘The Grand Canyon of the East’. This trip blends classic whitewater excitement with the elements of history and natural beauty to create a truly amazing adventure.

This unique experience features moderate to difficult rapids as a high volume of water constricts through the narrow gorge strewn with giant boulders. You’ll encounter huge holes, roller coaster waves and house-size rocks plus extras like “Jump Rock”, “Swimmer’s Rapid” and even ‘surfing’... West Virginia style! This trip is appropriate for beginners (age 12 and up), as well as experienced paddlers. The Lower New River alternates from Class II - V (mild - wild) rapids to pools, allowing paddlers a break between the action. It’s exciting, refreshing, invigorating and always unforgettable. You’ll even take out beneath the world famous New River Gorge Bridge on this trip.

We are booking the Memorial Day Madness Deal Cost is $142.80 per person including all taxes (same as last year) and includes:

1 Day Rafting (Sunday)
3 Nights camping Lite Breakfast each Morning Round-Trip River Shuttle Delicious Riverside Deli Lunch Complimentary Beverages (Beer) after Rafting Hot Showers Deluxe BBQ Dinner Cookout after Rafting

Also this place has a pool, hot tub, volleyball nets, bar, paintball course, and a clubhouse with wifi!

I posted the trip to start Saturday but please note that The Memorial Madness Trip is actually cheaper to book than doing a normal weekend trip and includes three nights of camping vs two. Even if you are only staying two nights it makes more sense to book at this rate.

Some of us are going to arrive Friday and will hopefully be going rock climbing nearby on Saturday but it is still up in the air. Unfortunately we do not have enough ropes or experienced climbers going to open the climbing portion of the trip up to the group in general at this time. However, if you are interested in climbing, please post a comment and your experience level and if you have your own ropes. If we get more people with experience and ropes more people can join us for climbing! Also there is an option to hire a guide which includes rope rental so if you're interested let me know!

A few of us have taken work off on Friday. It is a 7 hour drive from Ann Arbor so we will probably arrive around 6pm on Friday. You are welcome to arrive Friday and hang out at the campground on Saturday even if you aren't climbing. There is a paintball course that you can do or just enjoy the relaxation of the campground! Also some people in the past have used that opportunity to go hiking in the gorge and to visit the beautiful view at the New River Bridge!
If you're just joining us for rafting or can't come until Saturday, then plan to arrive on Saturday to camp overnight, raft on Sunday and return on Monday (Monday is Memorial Day).

Hi, I recently joined and just learned of this event. Just wanted to ask if anyone would mind if I came along as a first outing with the club, foregoing the meet and greet, etc. I'm always interested in something going on in the mountains. Also, does anyone have any details about put-in location/river length/hours of the rafting trip?

    May 19, 2014

    • Michael

Hi Leslea, I have a few loose ends to tie up in the morning before I can hit the road, so I won't be able to meet up afterall. Sorry to leave you hanging. Have a safe drive.

      May 23, 2014

Dudes! You may already know but there could be an awesome super-one-time-only-ever meteor shower Fri-night just as you set up camp in a dark-sky yellow/green zone! wooot! http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2014/05/20/camelopardalids_a_new_meteor_shower_from_comet_209p_linear.html

      May 22, 2014

Hi everybody, just saw the event and would really like to attend. Would anybody like to share a ride and gas expenses? I'm flexible in terms of when to leave and come back and totally fine with using my car. I live in the North Campus area of Ann Arbor and would really appreciate your help. Thanks

    BRIDGE WALK INFO
Must make a reservation by calling[masked]

It's $73.14 per person. They have tours at 11am, 12 and 3pm. I'm making a reservation for the 11am then doing some hiking after. More info at www.bridgewalk.com

    May 21, 2014

Leslea, thank you so much I found a partner in crime already. Will see you there :)

      May 21, 2014

  • Tracy

For people that are wondering how we will meet up, you can text or call me at[masked]-3029. Warning: cell reception may be spotty at the campground. Don't worry, I will make sure to let the people at the check-in know where our group has set up camp so they can direct you!

    May 21, 2014

  • Tracy

Hey Everyone! There was a mix-up at the campground where they accidentally switched us from Sunday to Saturday. Don't worry it has been corrected! The great news is that our raft time is now 10:15 (report an hour early) instead of 9am!

    1 · May 21, 2014

Does anyone have spare camping gear that I could borrow? Tent/sleeping bag?

    May 20, 2014

    • LeeAnn

Hi Keya, my tent should be big enough for two people. You can join me if you want. I also have a spare sleeping bag if you still need one. I'll be interested in hiking/bridge walk too.

      May 20, 2014

    • Keya

That sounds great! Either way on the sleeping bag is fine - btw u and Yuan, since it seems like we're all riding in the same car - have y'all decided where to park 'n meet?

      May 20, 2014

  • Yuan

Hi, LeeAnn, Lois and Kumar, Sorry, had a busy weekend and did not reply your question as quick as I would like to. As for carpool, if we can agree on a place in Ann Arbor to meet and you can park your vehicle, that will be great, otherwise I don't mind to pick you guys up, drive from my place to Canton then Ann Arbor is pretty much on the way. Regarding leaving time, I could start as early as 7:00 AM, but I am flexible, so what do you guys think?

    2 · May 19, 2014

    • Lois & J.

Hi, Yuan. Do you live in Northville? If yes, we could meet you at your place because it will be closer for us in comparison to Ann Arbor. Please kindly let me know. We are OK with the time.

      May 19, 2014

    • Keya

Hi Yuan, wondering if u still have room and where are the other carpoolers coming from? I'm on the far east side - if room is still available -- 7am might be challenging...

      May 20, 2014

  • kumar

Hey guys! I have to work Friday and will be leaving Ann Arbor on Saturday. Is there anybody else leaving on Saturday?

    May 19, 2014

  • Lois & J.

Anyone has carpool room for 2?

    May 15, 2014

    • Leslea

I plan on leaving with everone on Friday and probably will drive my own car. I have room too.

      May 18, 2014

    • kumar

Yuan: What time on Friday are you planning on leaving?

      May 18, 2014

  • Tracy

As far as food goes, I think we should plan to cook together on Saturday evening, everyone can bring their own meat to cook for themselves and then a dish to share so start thinking about what you want to bring. Lastly, don't forget to bring a pair of river shoes, either water shoes or sneakers or something that you can get wet and walk on rocks with, your feet will thank you!

    1 · May 7, 2014

    • Lois & J.

I will bring a small gas grill for cooking. As for food to share, I was thinking maybe we could create a bonfire and make some sweet potato on bonfire.

      1 · May 16, 2014

  • Tracy

11 people have paid, still waiting on 5 more of you! :)

    May 16, 2014

  • Lois & J.

Sounds fun! I would like to go climbing. I have my own rope and equipment.

    May 7, 2014

    • Joshua D R.

I am able to set sport routs up to 5.10- For short any new climber will be very challenged on the wall.

If we have access to the top of the climbs we would be able to top rope any route. I have two extra harnesses for people. So we can change between people and everyone can party.

      May 16, 2014

    • Tracy

sounds awesome Josh! I think we all have harnesses and shoes, just don't have the ropes and ability to set routes. There is access to the top to top rope, I just can't lead climb or set routes yet. I have a book with the routes, we would likely climb a 5.8 or 5.9

      May 16, 2014

  • Leslea

Since I am not a climber, I will be planning to do the bridge walk Saturday if anyone wants to join me.

    May 15, 2014

  • Tracy

Hey Everyone! I have 14 people that have RSVP'd on this page but only 4 of you have called and paid! Don't forget that in order to go on this trip you MUST call and make a reservation. I don't have an exact cutoff but in the past they usually need you locked in by the Wed or Thursday before Memorial weekend to make sure you get a spot on a boat!

    May 14, 2014

    • Joshua D R.

You should put the last paragraph first. No one actually

      May 15, 2014

  • Leslea

Also - and this may seem silly - where exactly is this trip? West Virginia?

    May 14, 2014

    • Amanda

Yes, the New River Gorge is in West Virginia! I've never been, but I've heard great things-- can't wait for us all to check it out!
